This position is located in the Pharmacy Service at the Boise VA Medical Center, Boise, Idaho.
The OPAT and CSP Inpatient Pharmacy Technician includes duties specific to Outpatient Parenteral Antimicrobial Treatment (OPAT) Program and the Compound Sterile Products (CSP) Program. This position works closely with the OPAT Program Manager and the Compounding Program Manager.
Duties
Coordinates the distribution of OPAT medications and supplies with the OPAT Team
Orders and maintains adequate medications and supplies for the OPAT Program
Completes all necessary forms and records for compounding of antibiotics daily.
Utilizes knowledge of stability and cost information to determine the appropriate vial sizes and delivery mechanisms to fill an antibiotic order while minimizing cost to the facility.
Understands specific handling considerations for storage, distribution, and disposal of medications.
Ensures the Pharmacy Service IV preparation area(s) and equipment stored there are clean, maintained and in good working order, communicating any needs to the appropriate supervisor or service.
Maintains a positive collaborative working relationship with other services within the hospital to procure appropriate equipment and supplies, relay patient needs, and deliver the final product to patients in an efficient and timely manner.
Assists in airborne particulate and microbial testing and surface testing to ensure cleaning schedules are met.
Assists in training and orientation of new staff to ensure consistency in the training process.
Performs duties of all lower grade technicians as needed.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 0700-1530

Qualifications
Area of Consideration: This position is only open to current, internal Boise VA Medical Center employees. Applicants must submit an SF-50 with application.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education or Experience: A high school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 months experience.
Certification: Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required at grades GS-6 and above.
Grade Qualifications GS-8:
Experience: Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level and demonstrate the KSAs below.
Certification: The employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:
(a) PTCB as a CPhT.
OR
(b) NHA as a ExCPT.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-08 assignments.
Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section.
Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.
