This position is located in the Integrated Surgical Services/Inpatient OB, Operating Room (OR) and Central Sterile and Receiving (CSR) Units within the Phoenix Indian Medical Center. Incumbent is responsible for decontamination, assembling, processing, sterilizing and issuing items for the nursing units, operating suite, PIMC clinics and field clinics. Medical Supply Technician is responsible for medical supply inventory and management; and other duties as assigned. Located in Phoenix, AZ.
Duties
Accounts for and processes surgical instruments to include complex loaner sets for scheduled and emergent cases.
Assembles a wide variety of instrument sets for surgical procedures and uses expert judgement to pick the proper equipment to perform surgery in several services.
Visually inspect required instruments for cleanliness, signs of damage, deterioration, or imperfection.
Selects appropriate chemical or washing agent necessary for decontaminating or cleaning surgical instruments. Removes gross or blood borne contaminants using required methods and procedures, such as soaking in a germicide, washing with a detergent-blood solvent, scrubbing with a brush and, rinsing in tap and then distilled water, or washing in washer-sterilizer or ultrasonic units.
Package instruments based on the sterilization method, place proper chemical indicator in pouch or wrapper, place of chemical indicator tape on the package, label the package per clinic name of set or instrument name, and place the package on the carrier that is used in the sterilizer.
Prepare trays as needed for clinical, per preference cards, or surgical need. Inspect all instrument sets prior to placing on cart for damage, holes in wrapper, arrows or pan locks placed and uniform change of external sterile indicator.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-6:Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Processing, assembling, troubleshooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. Experience also includes operating of washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and steam sterilizers; practice proper storage procedures and use aseptic techniques.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS GS-7:Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-6) in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Decontamination, assembling, processing, sterilizing, processing, and issuing items. Experience in reviewing medical supply inventory and management. Knowledge and experience in operating medical and other equipment such as: washer-sterilizers, automatic washers, index washers, cart washers, automated endoscopic reprocessing units, automatic dryers and ultrasonic units. Through knowledge of aseptic principles and techniques including various types of detergents; cleaning techniques; sterilizing mediums; and sterilizing operations. Demonstrates previous or relevant experience as a Medical Supply Technician or similar position.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
