You will serve as a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Industrial Hygiene Program Office (IHPO) of NMRTC PEARL HARBOR HI.
Salary Range
GS-09 $69,361-$88,116
GS-11 $79,780-$102,470
Duties
You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations individually and/or as part of a team.
You will prepare written workplace monitoring plans and track their completion, updating the plans as necessary.
You will maintain, calibrate and select appropriate equipment and conduct/oversee sampling.
You will provide consultation and advice to activities on occupational health problems and concerns, when requested.
You will utilize the Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness Systems (DOEHRS) database to generate survey reports and enter appropriate data.
You will recommend engineering, administrative, and PPE controls to correct deficiencies where feasible.
You will review facility plans for new construction, renovation and modification of existing structures for appropriate engineering controls to control physical, biological, and chemical hazards.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements
The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (external link) (ABIH).
Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
FOR THE GS-11:
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience performing inspections in a full range of industries in a given geographical area. Visits work centers, conducts walk-through to identify potential health hazards, and makes analysis for presence of toxic materials. Where potential hazards are indicated, selects measuring instruments and performs exposure monitoring activities, including personal air and noise monitoring and takes ventilation measurements in a variety of industrial work areas.
Experience conducting a background review of the industry and of the characteristics of the work process, reviews applicable standards and requirements contained in compliance manual.
Experience holding outbriefs to inform management representatives of alleged violations found, explains applicable standards, and recommendations for abatement.
Experience responding to telephone and email inquiries from employers and employees concerning occupational health matters.
Experience writing detailed reports of findings and documenting/tracking surveys and exposure monitoring schedules.
Experience utilizing industrial hygiene automated application/database/systems Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Readiness System - Industrial Hygiene (DOEHRS - IH) or similar, to conduct and document SEG exposure assessments - monitor/enter result and survey command information - maintain other data/metrics necessary to document work accomplished and perform program assessments
FOR THE GS-09:
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience performing inspections and responding to telephone and email inquiries from employers and employees concerning occupational health matters. Visits industries, conducts walk-through to identify potential health hazards, and makes analysis for presence of toxic materials. Documents findings in detailed written reports.
Experience selecting instruments and performing exposure monitoring activities, including personal air and noise monitoring and taking ventilation measurements in a variety of industrial work areas to assist in the evaluation of health hazards and to assist in determining control measures to minimize exposure.
Experience conducting a background review of the industry and of the characteristics of the work process, reviews applicable standards and requirements contained in compliance manual.
Experience responding to telephone and email inquiries from employers and employees concerning occupational health matters and utilizing computers, Microsoft Office Suite software products (e.g. Word, Excel, and/or Access), windows computer operating system/applications.

Evaluation of Experience

This experience must demonstrate a professional knowledge of the theory and application of the principles of industrial hygiene and closely related sciences such as physics and engineering controls.
Such work must have involved experience in all of the following areas: the acquisition of quantitative and qualitative data, and the measurement of exposures for a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses; the analysis of the data acquired and the prediction of probable effects of exposures on the health and well-being of workers; and the selection and recommendation of appropriate controls, including management, medical, engineering, education or training, and personal protective equipment.
