About the Position: The work includes specialization in cataloging and classification functions that require a variety of techniques and methods to determine the best approach. Assignments involve determining the nature and extent of information needs or problem areas, interpreting a variety of bibliographic records, information sources, and library materials, and planning the approach best suited to the situation.

Duties

As a Librarian (Digitization), you will perform the following duties which is not an all-inclusive list: Assists with the review and selection of materials for the digital library. Prepares materials for scanning and coordinates with the vendor to ensure library standards for scanning and naming digital objects are applied. Provides subject, descriptive, and administrative metadata for electronic and physical holdings in the CARL. Performs cataloging of digital objects using standard Dublin Core Metadata. Processes classified and unclassified archival and manuscript collections in analog and digital formats, to include the preservation of documents, arrangement and description of collections and production of in-depth finding aids. Provides ready reference and research assistance to library clientele, both in and out of the archives department. Interacts with clientele to explain basic searching techniques to locate material in the public access catalog, indexes and databases. Uses collection development tools to recommends resources for integrated research projects and other significant curricular needs.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Must be able to work irregular hours of duty, to include evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Librarian may be required to work overtime.
  • This position may require the incumbent to push loaded book carts and lift/carry items weighing up to 25 lbs.

Individual Occupational Requirements: The Librarian occupation has specific educational requirements which apply to all positions: Completion of one (1) full academic year of graduate study in library science in an accredited college or university, in addition to completion of all work required for a bachelor's degree; (NOTE: You will need to upload a copy of your transcripts) OR A total of at least five (5) years of a combination of college-level education, training, and experience. To qualify on this basis, the applicant must establish conclusively that the education, training, and experience provided a knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and techniques of professional librarianship; a knowledge of literature resources; and the knowledge and abilities essential for providing effective library and information services. (NOTE: You will need to upload a copy of your transcripts) -AND- Specialized experience requirement: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience at the GS -09 or equivalent grade/level which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: (1) providing access to a library 's digitized collection utilizing contemporary metadata schemes for electronic and physical library holdings; (2) performing cataloging of digital objects using established standards; and (3) assisting patrons in utilizing library resources. OR Education Substitution: Education leading to a Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or three (3) full academic years of progressively higher level graduate education or doctoral degree (Ph.D or equivalent) related to the position. (NOTE: You will need to upload a copy of your transcripts) OR Combination of Education and Experience: If you have some, but not all of the experience and education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education in excess of 36 hours (total semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Computer SkillsCustomer ServiceInformation ManagementTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09). All applicants must meet applicable time-in-grade and specialized experience requirements within thirty (30) days after the closing date of the announcements. NOTE: Applicants applying as VEOA candidates who are current GS civil service employees or are prior GS civil service employees within the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements.
