Position is located in Northern Great Plains Inventory & Monitoring Network. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately 8 months, and you will be in a non-pay status for 16 weeks from Dec. to March. Open to the first 75 applicants or until 9/6 whichever comes first. Duties

You will help implement a long-term ecological monitoring program for vegetation in 13 park units. You will visit field sites to implement and lead data collection. The position will involve a combination of office work, field time, and travel to the parks. You will assist both the Vegetation Ecologist and Lead Biological Technician in managing and running the field crews. This position works 10-hour days and requires constant travel to parks within Nebraska, Wyoming, South and North Dakota. You will be required to hike off trail with heavy packs, sometimes in extremely hot weather or through thick vegetation. The anticipated field season is May through October, with office work at the beginning and end of the season. You will perform the following duties: Leading plant data collection using established network monitoring protocols in including accurately identifying Northern Great Plains vegetation to the species level. Accurately identifying Northern Great Plains vegetation to the species level in the field or in the office using standard floras. Training crew members in appropriate data collection, entry and verification methods. Conducting fieldwork in remote backcountry settings and under difficult conditions in a safe and efficient manner. Entering data and following quality assurance procedures to ensure accurate data transcription into established databases. Assisting staff with protocol revisions and summary data reports.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/05/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience for this position is work involving one or more aspects of biological field work such as: leading field work for vegetation surveys using established protocols; systematically and correctly identifying native, exotic and invasive plants to species level. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one year (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) of directly related graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree with a major study in a field such as botany, vegetation management (or similar), biology, or ecology. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. To combine education and experience, first take the number of semester hours (or equivalent) earned towards a graduate degree and divide by 18 semester hours (or equivalent). Then take the number of months of full time experience and divide by 12 months. Add the percentages together. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts and hours/weeks worked must be included. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Current surplus and current or former displaced Federal individuals who have special priority selection rights under the Agency Career Transition Assistance Program (CTAP) or the Interagency Career Transition Assistance Program (ICTAP) must be well qualified for the position to receive consideration for special priority selection. Well qualified means that the applicant meets the following: OPM qualification standards for the position; all selective placement factors, where applicable; special qualifying conditions that OPM has approved for the position, where applicable; is physically qualified with reasonable accommodation, where appropriate to satisfactorily perform the duties of the position upon entry; and is rated by the organization at least at the well qualified level.
