This position is located in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), Office of Public Affairs, Assistant Commandant for Governmental and Public Affairs Directorate (CG-092), Washington, DC.
Duties
You will serve as a Public Affairs Specialist, executing a wide range of communications function designed to align internal and external communications, identify and mitigate risk, and enhance public understanding of Coast Guard (CG) policies, missions, and objectives.

- This position requires a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI).
- A state driver's license is required.
- A drug/alcohol test is required.
Qualifications
To qualify for the GS-12: Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal sector. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
Specialized experience must include:
Drafting strategic communications plans, talking points, and fact sheets; AND
Integrating earned media, digital media, events, etc. into strategic communications campaigns; AND
Coordinating public awareness campaigns; AND
Providing recommendations or revisions to programmatic elements and agency officials; AND
Using data, metrics, and analytics to refine communications goals; AND
Liaising with members of the media, writers, and agency officials to share information and maintain effective working relationships.
National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees.
