About the Position: You will serve as Second Assistant Engineer on an automated, diesel-powered, seagoing hopper dredge and you will be responsible for the proper and continuous operation of all engine -room machinery during assigned watch. This position will be aboard the DREDGE ESSAYONS or DREDGE YAQUINA.
Duties
As a Third Assistant Engineer aboard a seagoing, automated hopper dredge you will:
Stand regularly scheduled watches which includes routine inspection of all engineer spaces and equipment.
Observe pressure gauges. Maintain a log. Review work of Junior Engineers.
Assist Chief Engineer and other Senior Engineers with major repairs.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Pre-employment physical may be required.
- This is a mandatory drug Testing Designated Position (TDP), in accordance with EP 600-1-300, USACE Drug Testing Procedures for the Army's Drug-Free Federal Workplace (DFW) Program, dated 28 Feb 01 .
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 95% of the time.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.

This position is aboard a hopper dredge. The Portland District's hopper dredges Yaquina and Essayons, work to ensure a safe "highway" for ships and other vessels. The hopper dredge is a specialized sea-going vessel designed to dredge and transport dredged material from ocean bars, fast flowing rivers and isolated harbors to open-water disposal areas.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): for a Third Assistant Engineer -you must possess a current United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) Third Assistant Engineer 2250 horsepower, or higher or possess a current United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited Horsepower, and a current Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC).- You MUST UPLOAD your United States Coast Guard Credentials or you will be rated ineligible.- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
IAW NPPR 690-1-530 you may intermittently perform higher paying duties in a dual rate position provided you obtain and maintain appropriate US Coast Guard licenses/certifications.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Exposed to extremes of weather conditions, heat, and noise. There is danger of slippery decks and drowning must wear appropriate safety gear and protective clothing as required, and comply with sound safety practices. May be exposed to hot pipes, escaping steam and the effects of acids, solvents, and paint.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires moderate physical effort. Lifts and carries equipment and supplies normally up to 45 lbs. and occasionally over 45 lbs. Work requires prolonged standing, walking and climbing, all of which can cause exertion of the lower back. The employee must maintain good lower back physical condition. Incumbent must possess color and depth perception and be able to see by low visibility conditions in order to perform duties.
