This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, in the Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center in Beltsville, MD.
In this position, you will provide support in the various aspects concerned with food selection, sampling, analysis, data evaluation, quality control, validation, and data input.
Duties
Perform analytical chemistry techniques including high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis, and gas chromatography (GC) analysis.
Evaluate laboratory performance with respect to blind duplicates and quality control standards.
Work directly with researchers to plan for incorporation of food and nutrition data developed by scientists into databases.
Participate in research studies regarding food technology and analytical chemistry.
Requirements

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
In addition to meeting the basic education requirement above, all applicants must meet the following minimum qualification requirements
GS-12
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-12 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-11 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience acquiring and analyzing data; operating specialized laboratory equipment; and conducting analytical chemistry techniques on agricultural samples.
GS-13
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-13 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-12 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience analyzing food or nutrition variability; operating and maintaining a variety of complex laboratory instruments; and developing and implementing plans to obtain analytical data on food or nutrition.
GS-14
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-14 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-13 which is directly related to the work of this position and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is participating in the development of new techniques to improve accuracy of results; writing laboratory reports or preparing manuscripts related to chemistry; and performing analytical chemistry techniques including high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or gas chromatography (GC).
