This position provides maintenance service for the Fort Yuma Service Unit and attendant facilities and equipment that involve knowledge and skills in a variety of trades and crafts. Position is responsible for performing maintenance tasks on the following trade work: Electrical, Masonry, Carpentry, Plumbing, Roofing, Painting, Pipefitting, Grounds/Landscaping, Welding, A/C Equipment Maintenance, Heater/Boiler Plant, Electrical Equipment. Position reports to the Maintenance Worker Supervisor.
Duties
Major Duties:
Makes repairs that can be accomplished by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering and insulating defective wiring, controls, equipment and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays. Maintains, repairs or constructs of a variety of structures and surfaces of brick, block, stone, and other related materials.
Applies a general knowledge of wood, composite materials, wood substitutes, and woodworking techniques and basic shop mathematics.
Installing shingles and tiles, must have the ability to lay material in straight lines to insure proper overlap and coverage.
Install, repairs and maintain reducing valves, vacuum pumps, expansion locks and expansion joints. Performs cutting, bending, threading, assembling and pipe handling.
Completes monthly inspecitions for facilities equipment and makes necessary repairs.
Qualifications

WG-7: Follows oral or written instructions and/or work orders; performing maintenance mechanic duties, including use and apply standard building techniques, practices, and codes, read and understand blueprints, sketches and schematics, read and understand work orders in order to complete assigned work, use and maintain pneumatic hand tools, use and maintain shop tools, drill press, band saw, table saw, etc., follow manufacturer's instructions for use of power tools, follow safety manuals on operation of tools and equipment, follow safety guidelines working with oils and lubricants, working with inert gases and solvents, acids, adhesives, sealants, paints, oils and lubricants while performing maintenance tasks.
WG-8: Follows oral or written instructions and/or work orders; performing maintenance mechanic duties, including use and apply standard building techniques, practices, and codes, read and understand blueprints, sketches and schematics, read and understand work orders in order to complete assigned work, use and maintain pneumatic hand tools, use and maintain shop tools, drill press, band saw, table saw, etc., follow manufacturer's instructions for use of power tools, follow safety manuals on operation of tools and equipment, follow safety guidelines working with oils and lubricants, working with inert gases and solvents, acids, adhesives, sealants, paints, oils and lubricant while performing maintenance tasks, respond to frequent changes in instructions, with respect to the team, project and/or task, adhere to a schedule to perform preventive maintenance work and inspection and maintain complete records of work completed.
Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. The work performed is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment such as walk-in freezer units; sometimes required to make repairs and installation in bad weather or in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty. The Maintenance Worker is subject to danger of falling when working from ladders and scaffolds. Grade 8 mechanics are occasionally subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments. Exposure to repeated or concentrated amount of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs.
Physical Efforts: Maintenance Worker handles and carries tools, equipment and testing devices that seldom weigh over 50 pounds. Work is normally performed at sites where most of the equipment can be reached from the floor or from ladders. Occasionally, platforms and scaffolding are needed to reach part of the systems such as fans, electrical and water lines an duct work and required to stoop, stretch, bend, kneel, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.Operates a government owned vehicle and maintenance equipment in the performance of duties.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
