About the Position: The environmental scientist is responsible for independently planning and conducting assignments, interpreting policy and regulations based on extensive experience in the area, resolving conflicts and technical problems, and coordinating work with others, as required. This position is located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.

Duties

Plan special studies to evaluate the environmental and health impacts of projected waste disposal practices. Conduct Occupational and Environmental Health Site Assessments (OEHSAs), and multi-media environmental sampling. Conduct Technical Assistance Visits (TAVs) and training for a variety of Department of Defense (DoD) activities, and Army Preventive Medicine, Medical Detachments (MED DET – PM). Provide expert advice on environmental laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required
  • This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) of at least 30%.
  • A pre-employment physical is required, and periodic physicals may be required. Incumbent will have to pass a pre-employment physical to meet the physical efforts requirement.
  • Required to carry equipment weighing as much as 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to possess or obtain and maintain Defense Occupational and Environmental Health Reporting System (DOEHRS) access and training within six months of hire date.
  • This position has been designated “Mission Essential.” In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situation the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Incumbent will be required to ensure continuity of Public Health Command Region-Pacific’s operations during ALL hazards emergency situations.
  • Able to obtain and maintain Secret Security Clearance.

Basic Requirement: Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science OR Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to one of the majors, as shown in A above, that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting environmental studies, sampling sites, analyzing data, and determining health effects. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Oral CommunicationReasoningResearchTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
