This position is located in the Inventory and Monitoring Data Networks, in a National Park Service organization. The purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of complex biological science technical support functions. Career Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work form approximately from July-April and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Duties

The major duties of the Biological Science Technician (Aquatics) position include, but are not limited to, the following Collect aquatic ecology and hydrology data from remote wetlands (springs, rivers) across national park units in AZ, NM and TX. Identify amphibians and other aquatic animals using visual, aural, and indirect field techniques (eDNA and wildlife cameras). Collect associated water quantity, quality, and chemistry data to understand wetland conditions. Carefully follow established monitoring protocols. Manage data throughout the life cycle, from pre-season preparation through active field data collection and season close-out including certification procedures. Maintain equipment and electronic data collection and navigation devices. Lead, train and oversee the work of a team of 2-4 members both in an office and field setting. Provide leadership and mentorship for data collection, data management and safety protocols. Coordinate logistics such as daily and weekly work schedules, housing and camping arrangements, email communications to park staff, gear organization or purchase, and basic vehicle maintenance. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-09/05/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience. Failure to adequately provide information needed to determine number of hours worked in each position may result in that time not being credited when evaluating qualifying experience. For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected. To qualify for this position at the GS- 06 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes the following activities: 1)in a crew setting, executing field studies on aquatic ecology, such as fish, amphibians, aquatic macroinvertebrates, or aquatic plants; 2) working within field crews in wetland assessments and monitoring; 3) implementing aquatic resource management and monitoring or ecological restoration; 4) reporting data and other resource management information; and 5) providing advice, assistance, and training to lower graded employees and volunteers. You must include hours per week worked. To qualify for this position at the GS- 07 grade level, you must possess all of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes all of the following activities: 1) collecting monitoring data on assorted wetland restoration and aquatic system (springs, streams, or lakes) management projects using specified sampling techniques and procedures; 2) monitoring rare, threatened or endangered aquatic species (fish, amphibians, aquatic macroinvertebrates or aquatic plants) and updating plant maps and files; 3) collecting water quality, chemistry, and discharge information to support ecological restoration projects; 4) using standard statistical methods in the preparation of draft reports; and 5) providing work direction and guidance to field crews in wetland monitoring, exotic plant control, or restoration projects. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least one full year of graduate education that is directly related to the position. You must include transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. You must include your resume with hours worked per week annotated, as well as transcripts. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-06 grade level(s) of this announcement.
