This position is located in Inventory and Monitoring Data Networks. The purpose of the position is to perform uncomplicated technical biological science tasks common to natural resource management. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointment; work provided will not be on a year-round basis, but guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment.

Duties

The major duties of the Biological Science Technician position include, but are not limited to the following: Collect plant and soil data from remote sites across national park units in AZ, NM and TX. Identify all perennial plants to species using Latin binomials. Carefully follow established protocols. Manage data throughout the life cycle, from pre-season preparation through active field data collection and season close-out including certification procedures. Maintain equipment and electronic data collection and navigation devices. Lead, train and oversee the work of a team of 3-4 members both in an office and field setting. Provide leadership and mentorship for data collection, data management and safety protocols. Coordinate logistics such as daily and weekly work schedules, housing and camping arrangements, email communications to park staff, gear organization or purchase, and basic vehicle maintenance. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-06/07/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. Demonstrates expertise in applied plant taxonomy, specifically with some experience with the desert southwest flora (such as Sonoran, Chihuahuan or Mojave Desert flora's) regarding monitoring vegetation communities and identifying plants to species level. -AND- To qualify for this position at the GS-06 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience must include some of the following activities: 1) executing field studies on plants and plant ecology; 2) working with field crews in non-native plant eradication; 3) implementing vegetation management and monitoring or ecological restoration; 4) reporting data and other resource management information; and 5) providing advice, assistance, and training to lower graded employees and volunteers. You must include hours per week worked. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience must include all of the following activities: 1) collecting monitoring data on assorted physical restoration and vegetation management projects using specified sampling techniques and procedures; 2) monitoring rare, threatened or endangered plants and updating plant maps and files; 3) coordinating ecological restoration projects; 4) using standard statistical methods in the preparation of draft reports; and 5) providing work direction and guidance to field crews in vegetation monitoring, exotic plant control, or restoration projects. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: One full year (18 semester/27 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level coursework that is directly related to the work of the position such as biology, chemistry, statistics, entomology, animal husbandry, botany, physics, agriculture, or mathematics. You must include transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION: Combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position and specialized experience. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. You must include transcripts. You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies". Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-06 grade level(s) of this announcement.
