Duties
Serving as a Safety and Occupational Health Specialist GS-0018-12 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission. This position is located in the Glynco, Georgia.
Typical duties include:
Ensuring industrial hygiene inspections are conducted where occupational exposures/stressors exist.
Inspecting the physical facilities and equipment, road conditions, display of signs, ammunition warehouse, etc., in accordance with the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Life Safety Code and Regulations published under 29 CFR 1910, 1960, arid 1926
Governing safety and occupational health standards and managing the OAO Emergency Management Program.
Identifying all fire safety and safety and occupational health violations, notifying responsible parties for corrective action, record keeping of each violation, maintaining of abatement plans and performing follow-up inspections in accordance with OSHA Regulations, Emergency Management, and Hazardous Material Management.
Providing expert technical consultation advice and services involving safety inspections and investigations and recommending corrective actions to responsible personnel.
Coordinating safety and occupational health activities with representatives of medical, security, facility engineering, training, and other organizational component; consulting with electrical and mechanical maintenance personnel working in a variety of hazardous areas on types of protective equipment needed.
Conducting investigations and analyzing reports on unsafe working conditions; observing hazardous conditions to determine origin, causes and contributing factors; determining corrective actions; and preparing written evaluation reports concerning findings. Reporting must be of sufficient detail, accuracy, and overall quality to properly represent the facts to formal boards and legal hearings.
Performing special industrial hygiene monitoring tasks using a variety of instruments and contract services to determine potential unsafe exposures.
Reviewing drawings and specifications for construction and renovations to determine the degree of compliance with regulatory criteria; recommending procedures to control or eliminate hazardous operations or conditions; making recommendations for design changes and improvements to ensure compliance with Life Safety Codes and safety and occupational health standards.

Requirements

- Travel of 25% or less may be required.

- This position is Emergency Essential and required to sustain FLETC’s operations under all conditions, e. g., localized emergency situation, such as inclement weather, interruptions to power, or dismissal or closure of DHS operations or services.
- FLETC Continuity of Operations for Mission Essential Functions or Primary Mission Essential Functions in the event of an emergent disruption of operations locally or DHS-wide (such as Devolution and/or reconstitution).
- Required to undergo initial and random drug testing for illegal drug use. Employment is contingent upon favorable results.
- Must be able to meet job-related medical and/or fitness standards. Subject to an initial and annual physical examination that measures visual, hearing, and physical acuity.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license to conduct official government business.

Specialized Experience:
You must possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the federal service, conducting comprehensive Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) inspections; identifying potential hazards; determining methods to control or eliminate hazards; managing OSH program elements; developing and administering safety related training programs that inform and educate employees; and working in a team environment with direct coordination with a headquarters element.

Time-in-grade: Current General Schedule (GS) federal employees, and those that have served in GS positions within the last 52 weeks, must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade, or a combination of the next lower grade level and an equivalent band in the federal service by the closing of this announcement.

Physical Demands:
The work requires inspection of field sites, construction sites, and wide variety of physical structures and scenarios necessitating frequent walking, prolonged standing, occasional climbing and occasionally varying, moderately heavy equipment.
Work Environment:
Onsite evaluations and inspections involve exposure to inclement weather (primarily high heat and humidity), operating equipment, machinery, firearms, vehicle emissions, chemicals, hazardous and biological wastes, dust, vapors, and fumes, and high noise levels. Protective gear is required.
