The Primary Purpose of this Position is: To provide assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures and participate with surgical team members in planning and implementing complex procedures under the supervision of the perioperative registered nurse (circulator) and surgeon The Organizational Location of the position is: Operating Room, Perioperative Care, Associate Director for Patient Care Service, VA North Texas Health Care System

Duties

A Recruitment/Relocation Incentive may be authorized for a Highly Qualified Individual Duties include but are not limited to: Prepares, organizes and maintains complex surgical sterile setups Creates, maintains and oversees the sterile field. Sets up surgical field with required surgical instrumentation, medical equipment, surgical drapes, and sterile supplies for types of surgical procedures. Accounts for all surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedure. Identifies, assembles, handles, manages, and operate specialized complex medical equipment such as microscopes, LASERS, PHACO-emulsifier machine, robot, specialized surgical tables, and positioning devices. Communicates and collaborates with surgical team to include Per-operative registered nurse, staff surgeon, surgical residents, anesthesia providers and other ancillary staff to achieve positive patient outcomes. Mentors and shares information related to complex procedures with inexperienced staff on the surgical team. Work Schedule: Various Shifts (Days/Evenings/Nights) with on-call and Saturday rotation. Shift determined after orientation is completion. May be required to work other shifts, be on call, work weekends and/or holidays as patient care and needs of the service require. Should operational needs dictate, candidates must be willing to work within other units (including community based outpatient clinics, for example) to assist and support continuation of the provision of care/services. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/26/2024. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Functions as a primary and lead scrub person responsible for handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures.; Communicates and collaborates with members of the surgical team.; Performs sponge, sharps, and instrument counts to verify accuracy.; Processes, disassembles, cleans, re-assembles, and or sets up Reusable Medical Equipment.; Knowledge of surgical procedures. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have one full year of graduate education. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED). OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education beyond a Bachelors Degree. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED) Individual Occupational Requirements. Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled. or Education and Training For GS-3: Successful completion of l year of study that included study in medical, health, or related fields. For GS-4: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position. For GS-5: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position.
