About the Position: Civilian employees serve a vital role in supporting the Army mission. They provide the skills that are not readily available in the military, but crucial to support military operations. The Army integrates the talents and skills of its military and civilian members to form a Total Army.

Duties

Perform extensive composite bondings repair operations. Utilize rough sketches, blueprints, manufacturer specification, and verbal instructions from design engineers to repair or manufacture composites, molds, bond forms, and fixtures. Examine and evaluate parts and structures to determine repairs required and tools/materials needed to accomplish. Repair, manufacture, and install a variety of structural composite panels (i.e. honeycomb, Kevlar, fiberglass, graphite) having numerous curves angles and shapes. Determine the lay-up procedure (room temperature or autoclave) as well as the curing and bonding techniques to use. Manufacture molds using available parts or patterns, and apply guidelines relating to mixture, ratio, required cure times, temperatures, pressures of compound materials, etc. Utilize a variety of woodworking equipment such as lathes, routers, and milling machines; and low-pressure shaping, forming, and molding tools and equipment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position
  • The incumbent must successfully complete composite/fiberglass repair training requirements within six months of being assigned to position.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Composite Worker without more than normal supervision to include: 1) perform work involving the fabrication, modification, repair, assembly and installation of fiberglass, metal-to-metal and metal-to-fiberglass honeycomb items; 2) operate bonding and metal equipment and tools such as autoclaves, temperature control units, routers, skill and band saws, drill press, rivet hammer, impact gun, sheet metal pliers, micrometers, etc.; AND 3) interpret and apply guidelines relating to mixture, ratio, required cure times, temperatures, pressures of compound materials, etc. I can utilize heat and low pressure processing to accomplish bonding tasks and manufacture molds using available parts or patterns. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below.
