About the Position: This position is located at the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC).
Duties
Operate upset forging machine by applying vertical or horizontal pressure to shape hot metal within prescribed tolerances.
Set up and operates induction machine for heating billets to be upset.
Set furnace controls, set up and aligns dies within prescribed tolerances, operate hammer, and trim flash.
Operate forklifts, hand-driven carts, overhead cranes, power manipulators, pneumatic key drivers, and tongs as needed in performance of duties.
Work with shop orders and blueprints throughout work processes.
Check completed parts with various types of measuring instruments to include calipers and micrometers.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Subject to pre-employment and annual physical examination.
Qualifications
Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 1 year by a current permanent Army employee. Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition.
This position will be filled at the WG-08 or WG-10 level. If selected at the WG-08 level, noncompetitive promotion to the full performance level is authorized.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Metal Forger without more than normal supervision. - Applicants must meet the screen out element to be considered further. The work of the position normally includes: Reading drawings and blueprints; setting up and operating both drop hammers and upset forging machines; program and operate pre-heat furnaces; and checking the forged parts to ensure they are in compliance with specifications. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Efforts: Work assignments involve standing, walking, stooping, bending, and kneeling and may be done in awkward positions. Continually handles objects weighing from 20 to 50 pounds and occasionally objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Must have excellent hand, eye, and foot coordination.
Working Conditions: Works inside areas that are adequately lighted, ventilated, and heated. Frequently exposed to noise and hazards caused by pounding and hammering of metals, moving objects, and sharp edges with the possibility of cuts and bruises, and excessive heat from furnaces and heated materials with the possibility of burns. Unpleasant conditions from dirt, dust, smoke fumes, and gasses frequently exist. Floor surfaces are sometimes uneven and/or wet. Various protective devices such as hard hats, gloves, ear plugs, safety shoes, and glasses are used.
