About the Position: This position is located at the Rock Island Arsenal Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (RIA-JMTC):
Duties
Set up and operate upset forging machines.
Set up and operate 1,000 pounds to 12,000-pound steam, pneumatic, and hydraulic hammers.
Program preheated furnaces to required temperatures.
Forge a variety of metal parts from ferrous and non-ferrous materials.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Appointment requires pre-employment and annual physical examination.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 20 to 50lbs. and occasionally objects up to 100 pounds in the regular performance of duties.
- Position may require shift work

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Metal Forger ~ without more than normal supervision. 1) Read drawings/blueprints; 2) Set up hammers under close guidance; 3) Set the controllers for furnaces 4) Blowing scale and lubricant- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Work assignments involve standing, walking, stooping, bending, and kneeling and may be done in awkward positions. Continually handles objects weighing from 20 to 50 pounds and occasionally objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works in area of heat treat furnaces where temperatures may be above average. Is constantly exposed to the possibility of severe burns due to abnormally higher temperatures reached by metals from forging and being heated in furnaces. Work is in dirty area where the noise constantly reaches a level which is difficult to talk over. Wears a variety of Personal Protective Equipment to ensure safety.
Education
