The incumbent is responsible for planning, coordinating and performing all major maintenance activities within their area of responsibility. The supervisor serves as the technical expert for asset management, including historic asset preservation, road maintenance, train maintenance, general construction renovation, and utilities maintenance over several camping areas and recreational sites.

Duties

Incumbent directs all Buildings, Utilities and Historic Preservation field programs and activities to facilitate accomplishment of established park and division goals and objectives. Provides basic information for budget preparation and monitors expenditures. Makes decisions to facilitate program accomplishments, monitors program and ensures that required controls and accountability are maintained. Ensures operational compliance with NPS guidelines, state and federal regulations concerning hazardous wastes, material handling and storage, building codes etc. Incumbent must have knowledge of trades, crafts and fleet operations supervised and basic understanding of blueprints and design drawings. Incumbent must have the knowledge of necessary tools, equipment, supplies and materials to facilitate the workload. Incumbent is expected to coordinate frequent changes in variety and volume in the workload and meet deadlines in completing work assignments. Incumbent will serve as Contracting Officer's Representative in construction and restoration and contracted maintenance projects as required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbent may be required to lift in excess of 50 pounds. Bending, stretching, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing on ladders or scaffolding, walking, running and wading may be necessary to perform all major responsibilities as assigned. Up to fifty percent of the incumbent's time could be spent working outside in temperatures. that range from +90 degrees during the summer months to -40 degrees during the winter. Administrative work is primarily sedentary and performed in an office setting. WORKING CONDITIONS: Working conditions, supervision, maintenance management, and administration are extremely challenging because of the park's remoteness, the unpredictability of Lake Superior and the lack of overland transportation routes. Operation of boats is required to transport equipment, materials, supplies, and personnel into and through this water oriented park. These factors create a maintenance operation more complex and more difficult than is indicated by a statistical breakdown of facilities, personnel, visitation, land area, and equipment inventories. Winter operations and maintenance activities may expose incumbent to temperatures as low as 40 degrees below zero, and could involve snowmobile travel over frozen lake surfaces, requiring a thorough knowledge of changing ice conditions to avoid potentially injurious or deadly exposure. In the spring and summer months, the incumbent may be exposed to poisonous and non-poisonous insect bites. Occasionally may be required to stay in shared island quarters, either planned or unplanned due to inclement weather, where teamwork with supervisors and subordinates is necessary. To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: SCREEN OUT: Ability to supervise through subordinate supervisors: Independently performed the work as a Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor, WS-4749 including responsibility for the development, implementation, management and supervision of long/short-range and day-to-day activities of a park, or similar field maintenance operation including: repair of facilities (historic, non-historic buildings and housings units), utilities, roads, ground trails, fences, campgrounds, day use areas, comfort stations, sign operations, and vehicle fleet operation/maintenance; leading the hiring process for key vacancies by performing the recruitment process including, reviewing applications, interviewing, checking references and making selections. Perform work for performance appraisals and personnel conduct and performance. Planning, budgeting, estimating, scheduling, tracking, and executing project work and reoccurring operational and maintenance activities. Supervising multiple crews in the maintenance, preventative maintenance, new construction, operation, recurring work for project and program operation, maintenance, and construction. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
