This position is located in the Building Maintenance department, Support Services division, for Morale, Welfare and Recreation, Naval Station Mayport, in Jacksonville, Florida.

Duties

Interprets project construction and project renovation blueprints; prepares layouts and sketches, and prepares tool, material and equipment purchase requests. Accomplishes carpentry, electrical, masonry, and plumbing work assignments from the initial layout to final completion or installation. Work must be accurate, to specifications, and according to job requirements. Constructs buildings and facilities from wood and other types of building materials using exacting measurements to install framework, beams, rafters, doors, windows, paneling, and interior and exterior trim. Constructs counters and cabinets using plywood, finished wood, Formica and other applicable materials. Alters, repairs, and modifies facilities and structures, such as doors, finished paneling, windows, where accuracy, spacing, and fits are mandatory and structural soundness or appearance is essential. Constructs buildings and facilities using concrete block, bricks, and stone using exacting measurements to install doors, windows, beams, rafters, paneling and interior and exterior trim. Installs electrical wiring in newly constructed facilities and replaces wiring in newly renovated facilities. Installs lighting fixtures, switches and receptacles; tests electrical circuits to determine if adequate amperage is available and corrects deficiencies. Installs plumbing in newly constructed facilities, replaces plumbing lines and plumbing fixtures in newly renovated facilities, and trouble shoots drain clogging, fixture problems, and line breaks in old facilities and corrects the problem. Repairs roofs, which involves the use of various types of roofing materials. Traces and locates leaks, identifies the extent of damage, and selects the materials and method to repair. Work may also involve the modification of roofs such as installing sky lights and other roofing accessories such as gutters and metal flashing. Paints using wire brushes, sandpaper and other paint remover items to remove old paint from surfaces to which new coats of paint are applied by brush, roller or spray gun. Determines the type of material and tools needed, keeping in mind budgetary constraints. Material selections are made from a variety of choices and substitutions are made without supervisory approval. Requires exacting measurements when working from blueprints, drawings, or sketches. Draws diagrams and determines work requirements from general descriptions and verbal requests provided by lay persons. Interprets and incorporates OSHA rules and regulations. Accomplish work assignments that are provided in broad terms. Work has to be exact, paying close attention to specifications and codes with appearance being a major factor in the final product.

Requirements

  • Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
  • Must successfully pass the E-verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
  • You must go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9.
  • Must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National.
  • A valid State driver's license is required to operate motor vehicles.
  • Must have your salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959.

Qualifying experience must have been equivalent to the next lower level in the normal line of progression. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Must interpret blueprints and sketches and apply correct specifications and comply with applicable building codes. Required to draw accurate sketches to specifications including accurate measurements. Must have a knowledge of advanced shop materials for the planning and computing of projects that include areas, tangents and circles. Must set up, adjust and adapt hand tools to accomplish difficult tasks such as cutting bevels, chambers, dados, grooves and miter joints. Must sharpen saws, saw blades, drill bits, chisels, and other types of tools that are dulled from normal use. Determines the kind and types of materials and tools needed to complete assignments using individual initiative. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer and part time experience.
