Duties
As a Health Scientist you will:
Serves as the senior laboratory scientific advisor to the Branch Chief, and other senior staff, in the formulation of program goals, objectives and broad operating policies related to the full scope of specialized public health programs. Provides scientific, technical and managerial expertise and leadership in the development and enhancement of laboratory programs focused on emerging and re-emerging diseases. Develops, implements and evaluates program and projects and provides consultation and expert scientific advice in support of laboratory research and development activities in Division of Global Health Protection (DGHP) programs to improve laboratory capacity in responding to emerging and re-emerging diseases.
Arbitrates scientific and administrative differences on cross CC collaborative science activities. Facilitates Division discussion, collaboration, training and as appropriate, standardization of the implementation of CDC's laboratory science related policies including peer review, human subjects, data sharing/archiving, extramural research, data quality, authorship/clearance, goals management tracking, and research planning and evaluation, including the development of outcome and impact measures.
Supervisory Duties: Supervises a small contingent of positions. Plans work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work, when necessary. Assigns work to subordinates based on priorities, considering difficulty and requirements of assignments as well as the capabilities of employees. Give advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters. Occasionally interview candidates for positions in the work unit. May recommend appointment, promotion, or reassignment of employees to supervisor. May hear and resolve complaints from employees, referring group grievances and more serious unresolved complaints to a higher level supervisor. May effect minor disciplinary measures, such as warnings and reprimands. Refer more serious cases to the supervisor for resolution.

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: serving as advisor for planning, design, implementation and analysis of public health and laboratory activities.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
