About the Position: The position serves as a Medical Records Administration Specialist in the Coding Compliance Section, Medical Records Branch, and Patient Administration Division (PAD).

Duties
Documents any clinical conditions or procedures to support the appropriate severity of illness, expected risk of mortality, and complexity of care of the patient.
Recommends changes to coding and workload guidelines/policies, processes, and procedures when required to meet goals and objectives.
Resolves problems and refers back to providers those records appearing to have omissions or sequencing questions.
Provides technical guidance and assistance regarding counting and reporting of workload.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).

- MANAGEMENT PREFER, BUT NOT REQUIRED: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Specialist -Physician Based (CCS-P),
- or Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or credentials as a Certified Professional, Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Coder - Hospital Based (CPC-H),
- or Certified Documentation Expert Outpatient (CDEO) from the American Association of Professional Coders.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes reviewing medical records to ensure all diagnoses and procedures are properly documented and coded; analyzing coding for adequacy and/or procedural problems; utilizing clinical information systems retrieve coding information for reporting or data analysis; and assisting others/teaching proper documentation and coding procedures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).
OR
Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Medical Records Administration, Healthcare Administration and Health Information Management.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Preferred Certification: Certifications thru AHIMA- RHIT, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P. AAPC, CPC or equivalent is preferred but not required.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
