This position is located at the Golf Branch, Recreation Division; Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) Department; Naval Air Station, Jacksonville, Florida. The purpose of this position is to maintain the golf course complex in a satisfactory condition, including the greens, fairways, rough, driving range, areas adjacent to buildings, and other facilities at the golf course.
Duties
Operates gas and diesel-powered tractor, drawn and tractor powered mowing equipment, including a 3, 5, 7, and 9 gang real mower, off-set counter-balanced rotary mower, sand trap rake, sweeper, spiker, verticutter, aerator, top dresser, fertilizer spreader, sod cutter, stump remover, front-end loader, back-hoe, and grading blade.
Operates a dump truck and other types of heavy duty equipment needed to do daily maintenance, make special repairs, construct new tees, greens, or hazards, and to do tree pruning, trimming, or planting.
Mows lawns, fairways, roughs, and tees at designated cuts including rough terrains; removes debris, dead grass, broken tree limbs, leaves, and keeps assigned areas clean, presentable, and as attractive as possible, depending on the season and weather conditions.
Applies the proper amounts of fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides, and nemacides according to manufacturer's directions and instructions.
Digs trenches, cleans ditches and removes weeds around buildings, fences, shelters, tee markers, yardage identification markers, trees, shrubbery, cart paths, sidewalks, and other such locations, using hand tools such as a shovel, hoe, rake, pruning sheers, and other types of specialized hand tools.
Maintains, repairs, and installs watering system lines, sprinkler heads, and low voltage electric lines and switches associated with automatic watering systems.
Operates a truckster, trap trimmer, portable pump, utility mowers, weed eaters, and several types of hand tools including an axe, crowbar, cup cutter, wheelbarrow, sod edger, sod lifter, shovel, spade, rake, pick, pruners, tree saw, animal traps, and watering accessories such as hoses, nozzles, sprinklers, and plumbing tools.
Performs preventive maintenance on gas- and diesel-powered machinery, and electric powered carts, buffers, and vacuum cleaners, and other types of mechanical equipment and hand tools used to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities.
CONTROLS OVER THE POSITION:
Works under the administrative supervision of the Golf Course Manager, the general supervision of the Greens Superintendent, and the direct supervision of the tractor operator leader.
Work assignments are received orally, by memo, and written work assignment, according to a general maintenance plan.
Completed work is checked periodically to ensure proper application of chemicals, levels of cutting, degree of cleanliness, and compliance with the maintenance plan.
Requirements
- Must be 18 years or older.
- Must meet Federal Employment suitability requirements and successful completion of background investigation. Background investigations are conducted using fingerprint identification and completion of background inquiry forms.
- Must successfully pass the E-verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
- You must go through a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) process that requires two forms of identification from the Form I-9.
- May be required to pass pre-employment examinations.
- Must provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or U.S. National.
- A valid State driver's license is required to operate motor vehicles.
- Must have salary sent to a financial institution of your choice by Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer.
- Must be able to work outside, subject to inclement weather condition.
- Must be able to carry, lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to stand, walk, stoop, and lift.

One year of specialized experience directly related to the duties described above.
Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
- A high degree of skill is needed to maneuver driver operated machinery on hills, steep slopes, in tight places, small spaces, and areas with very limited turning radiuses.
- A high degree of manual skill and prior work experience is required to work safely with powered hand tools and hand tools used to do cleaning, maintenance and repairs to grounds and facilities.
- Must be able to follow oral and written instructions and accomplish work independently and with minimal supervision.
- Continual care and safety practices must be exercised because of the types of hand tools and power equipment used, and because of the weights being moved, lifted, loaded and unloaded.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
