Duties

You will direct assistants assigned to the crew to ensure that they work efficiently and safely. You will select proper tow bar for particular type of aircraft to be moved and attaches it to approved connection points, which vary in accordance with the type of aircraft. You will unsecure aircraft by removal of tie down chains, wheel chocks, unlock canopy's, and enter the cockpit or cabin, to release parking brakes, and tail wheel locks. You will ensure landing gear locks are in position, wing fold strut locks are secure, blades and blade racks are secure (for helicopters) and all other safety devices pertinent to moving the aircraft installed.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • Must be able to possess or be able to obtain and maintain, a valid state class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with hazardous materials and air brake endorsements and all appropriate government licenses.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

Qualifications

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: The ability to perform common tasks including: moving aircrafts by operating tow tractors, ensuring landing gear is in position, and performing maintenance work on aircraft tow tractors, tow bars and handling dollies. Under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
