The Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT), Mammography, employee at this level is fully functional as a DRT, in both General Diagnostic X-Ray, and Mammography sections, and carries out the assigned tasks independently. This specialty modality (breast imaging) requires specific knowledge of breast imaging examinations including Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC), mammography (digital and tomosynthesis), ultrasound, breast imaging procedures.
Duties
Include but are not limited to:
Performs difficult and highly specialized radiographic examinations of the breast (mammography) utilizing a variety of specialized techniques that require precise positioning and produce quality results.
Sets up exam room for procedures, assuring adequate and appropriate sterile supplies, special needles and other equipment are present in sufficient quantities and are in working order.
Explains procedure/exam, positions patient, selects and sets the correct technical factors, sets up and adjusts accessory equipment.
The incumbent will have administrative duties, including the performance and documentation of QC required to maintain compliance with all QC and QA requirements as per VHA policy, FDA/MQSA regulations and ACR standards in mammography. The incumbent may be required to train and/or serve as a preceptor for Radiologic Technologist in training and/or students.
Determines what technique to use in performing imaging tests from the clinical history annotated on the electronic order, prior mammograms and the MRS system. Assesses patient's condition and adjusts equipment to vary technique to accommodate patients with special needs.
Applies Infection Control practices and procedures for patients and staff, as mandated by the Medical Center and Radiology Service Infection Control policies.
Conducts all quality assurance/quality control tests on equipment (mammography/tomosynthesis unit, stereotactic biopsy unit, specimen radiograph unit etc.) and other tests to ensure accuracy of equipment and as mandated by the manufacturer, MQSA, the ACR and FDA.
Mammographic technologist will perform diagnostic radiology technologist (DRT) duties during the workweek, when not assigned to mammography, and will perform DRT duties on weekends and holidays (when needed on a rotating schedule)
Assists with the daily functioning of the Breast Imaging Section. Performs administrative roles as directed by the radiologist, supervisory technologist, or Radiology Section Chief.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable].
Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d)
Grade Determinations: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level of GS-8, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*):
*Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures.
Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers.
*Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure.
Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography.
Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions.
Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-9.
Physical Requirements: See VA directive and Handbook 5019. The physical demands of the work includes: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-45 pounds; pushing, pulling, and reaching above shoulders up to 4 hours; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, standing, and/or sitting; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
