The Diagnostic Radiologist Supervisor will be responsible for directing unit activities, technologists, and ancillary personnel. The incumbent will be responsible for the efficiency and quality of imaging services, for maintenance of the records required, and for the preparation of reports on imaging operations. Also, has the responsibility for instructing technologist trainees and resident physicians in the theory and practice of imaging procedures to include quality control.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: The incumbent works under the supervision of the Chief Technologist and Radiology Service Chief and is expected to carry out his/her clinical and non-clinical duties with considerable independence. In the absence of the Chief Technologist and Radiology Service Chief, the incumbent assists the Administrative Officer in carrying out daily activities. Reviews studies for technical quality, resolves technical problems and takes appropriate corrective action. Investigation and correction of technical problems must be prompt and effective to maintain efficient operation. Has technical oversight for Quality Assurance and Quality Control for assigned areas. Assigns responsibility, reviews result, maintains records, and takes corrective action as needed for Quality Assurance and Quality Control for the assigned areas. Makes work assignments in the service based on workload, urgency of need, availability of equipment, and level of staff training. Adjustments are frequently required because of emergency requests, unexpected developments, or radiation safety emergencies. Is qualified to perform a full range of diagnostic radiologic procedures, when required by personnel shortages or workload backup. Assists in preparing and justifying projected budget requests for approval by Fiscal Service and Medical Center Director. Teaches and trains new personnel in Radiologic Technology, reviews technologists in basic physics and radiologic instrumentation theory, and plans and implements staff In-Service Training programs. Supervises computer acquisition and processing of all procedures. Responsible for the efficient organization and planning of the workload of the personnel, time slot scheduling and equipment utilization Work Schedule: 8:30am - 5pm *This position requires on-call duties and occasional overtime. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Physical Requirements stated below. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Grade Determinations: 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level of GS-10. Qualifying experience includes: evaluates new products and equipment, making recommendations to supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. [The technologist] informs higher level management of anticipated staffing variances and informally recommends promotions, reassignments, or other personnel changes such as retention or release of probationary employees, and recognition of superior performance in the diagnostic radiologic area. [The technologist] directs the development and implementation of services and treatment to patients through the supervision, mentoring, and oversight of assigned clinical staff. Experience must demonstrate practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Preferred Experience: 1-2 years in a supervisory role References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-25. Subparagraph e. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-11. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-11. Physical Requirements: The physical demand of the work includes Heavy lifting, 45 pounds and over; moderate carrying, 15-44 pounds; pushing up to 4 hours; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, prolonged standing; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); speed in working; and emotional stability. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing lead apron for long periods of time.
