Duties

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for enforcing Civil laws that protect life, liberty and the property of citizens. You will support Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a variety of legal assistance. Typical work assignments will include: Acts as a technical authority on unusually complicated legal matters and performs substantive research, evaluation, and analysis of a variety of specialized legal topics and points of law. Advises and mentors office paralegals, legal administrative specialists, and legal assistants regarding civil litigation actions by making recommendations and suggestions on highly involved problems of case development. Performs substantive legal analysis of requests for information under the provisions of various acts and which involve unusually complicated legal matters such as statutory, regulatory, court and administrative precedents in the civil defensive litigation area. Drafts complex legal documents that require expertise in exploring and sorting out subtle or tenuous legal, technical, and/or program- related elements of cases or legal matters crucial to a line of argument upon which the case will be decided. Manages discovery and evidence in electronic and hard copy formats, prepares for the use of it in each stage of litigation and may present the exhibits using trial presentation software in court. Coordinates production of administrative records and responses to requests for discovery. Provides automated litigation assistance to attorneys in trial preparation and courtroom presentations. Provides technical support, such as enlarging charts and photographs, duplicating tapes and videos, and marking exhibits. Prepares and organizes trial exhibits, documents, memoranda, reports and correspondence relating to cases for review by AUSAs. Compiles case files for AUSAs and coordinates with appropriate points of contact to obtain copies of all documentation pertinent to the case or claim. Receives written and oral requests for assistance from individuals from both USAO staff and from other governmental agencies. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation
  • You must be registered for Selective Service, if applicable.
  • If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law. See http://www.sss.gov/.
  • If selected, you may be required to complete a one year probationary period.
  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.
  • You must meet all qualification requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement and before placement in the position.

Qualifications

GS-12: : To be eligible at this level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level. One year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level in Federal service. Examples of specialized experience for this position include: Experience applying knowledge of the application of various laws, court and/or administrative decisions, and interpretations related to Defensive Litigation; performing substantive research; evaluating and analyzing a variety of specialized legal topics and points of law; drafting initial legal and administrative briefs, USAO motions, oppositions to defense motions, and correspondence for AUSA review; coordinating production of administrative records and responses to requests for discovery; preparing and organizing voluminous documentation and evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial; and participating in pre-trial witness conferences, noting any deficiencies in case materials. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-12 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-11. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials.
