The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI), GS-0647-10 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Safety Officer will have full knowledge of equipment and protocols/procedures in both General Diagnostic X-ray and MRI sections and may be asked to perform duties in either section dependent on departmental needs. Technologists operating as an MRSO work to maintain an MR safety program. Duties of the position include management of an effective screening program and development of MRI-safe scan protocols.
Duties
Include but are not limited to:
Employees at this grade will demonstrate high-level skills and a thorough understanding of complex procedures, to include positioning, specialized techniques, and advanced knowledge in MRI safety to include implant safety
Will participate in and be an integral part of Departmental and Facility committees, as needed, such as MRI Safety Committee, and Radiology Quality Improvement Committee. Reports minutes from MRI Safety Committee to the Quality Executive Committee at least quarterly.
Will be responsible for researching patient implants and/or contraindications for MRI.
Will provide guidance and training for new employees to include orientation to MRI area, policy overviews, protocol overview, and MRI competencies, training, and safety screenings of all contract employees to include EMS.
Incumbent will have working knowledge of the PACS system, VISTA, and CPRS computer programs. Ensures images are transmitted successfully. Maintains ARRT licensure requirements and meets all VA standards for continuing education.
Documents and ensures QC of MRI equipment and scans at required intervals
As an expert in the MRI Safety field, incumbent assumes lead and responsibility for maintaining a safe environment in the MRI area for all employees, patients, and visitors.
Incumbent screens patients prior to the exam to determine if there are any contraindications to the procedure or to the patient being exposed to a magnetic field (such as metallic foreign bodies, contraindicated medical devices, etc). Allays patient anxiety by informing the patient about what the MRI examination entails and what the patient can expect.
Independently makes standard examinations. Establish and monitor quality control programs.
Work Schedule: 12:00 pm - 8:30pm, Monday- Friday, M-F.
*This Position supports 24/7 operations throughout the calendar year. Work is typically performed on the day shift; however, candidate may be subject to overtime work, shift work, and/or work on rotating shifts to include evenings, weekends, and holidays. Subject to call back outside tour of duty.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable].
Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).]
English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level of GS-9 directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs:
Knowledge of safety requirements for physical space pertaining to MR imaging area.
Ability to establish and monitor access and safety requirements for the physical zones.
Ability to develop and ensure that adequate written safety procedures, work instructions, emergency procedures, and operating instructions are issued and enforced.
Knowledge of hazards posed by magnetic fields on implants, medical devices, hospital equipment and retained foreign bodies, and the development of measures taken against those hazards.
Ability to train medical, technical, nursing and all other relevant staff groups (including ancillary workers) in all procedural aspects related to MR safety.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-9. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-9.
Physical Requirements: See VA directive and Handbook 5019. The physical demands of the work include: Heavy lifting, 45 pounds or over; moderate carrying 15-45 pounds; pushing, pulling, and reaching above shoulders up to 4 hours; use of fingers, good dexterity (both hands required); prolonged walking, standing, and/or sitting; repeated bending; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid not permitted in Zone 4); and speed in working. Must have the ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
