This position is organizationally known as a Locksmith and reports to the Chief of Police within Police Service within VISN 19 facilities. The single focus of this position is repair, overhauling, modifying, testing, and installing a variety of locking devices typically found on doors, desks, compartments, mobile equipment, safes, vaults, and other secured locations. This position is located at the VA Medical Center in Aurora, CO.

Duties

Duties include but are limited to the following. Provide technical assistance and guidance to remote customer locations and to lower graded/less experienced locksmith personnel. Performs the full range of work in the installation, repair, maintenance, and modification of a wide variety of commercial locking devices with varying makes and models found in doors, desks, safes, vaults, compartments, mobile equipment, electronic access control systems and secured areas. Disassembles repairs, cleans, reassembles, and reinstalls a large variety of moderate to extremely complex locking devices to include modification for doors as needed for locksets. Provides expert advice and recommendations to management on the most appropriate locks/systems for specific security requirements. Designs and installs locks and integrated locking systems to meet special security requirements and management needs. Attends seminars/training and carefully reviews trade journals, catalogs, regulations, and manuals to maintain expert knowledge of locks and associated hardware, new products, and regulatory requirements affecting work. Maintains required records. Troubleshoots to determine malfunctioning components and repairs by reworking existing parts based on knowledge of internal structure plus the operating characteristics of a wide range of models and of their working interrelationship with related components. Uses a large variety of intricate tools to perform this work and provides maintenance on same. Installs new parts as needed and fabricates repair items such as locking bolts and special screws. May also fabricate parts necessary to repair locks no longer in production, requiring careful determination of dimensions/specifications and the use of a variety of hand and power tools. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you MUST meeting the following requirements. (Screen-Out) You must have the ability to perform the duties of the Locksmith without more than normal supervision. Experience includes installing, maintaining, and repairing a variety of locking devices and their component parts; cutting keys, changing combination locks and locking devices by picking, manipulating or drilling; installing, repairing, or replacing building hardware including door closers, locks, hinges, etc.; planning and laying out work to identify dimensions or parts required. NOTE: Your skills must be documented in your resume to receive full credit. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: Work assignments require standing, stooping, bending, kneeling for prolonged periods as well as working in cramped and awkward positions. Incumbent is required to lift items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds. Work is normally performed in a well-lighted, heated, and ventilated area. Occasionally work is done outside in inclement weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. Incumbent is exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, and serious burns. Travel facilities assigned to offsite facilities logistically separated from the medical center is a regular occurrence. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
