Duties
Major Duties: As a Pathways Intern, you will perform assignments designed to increase your familiarity with the functions and operations of the National Park Service while applying public contact and customer service, fee collection, and concepts related to the preservation and protection of natural and cultural resources. Specific duties include: (1) Collects entrance and Ranger III ferryfees and issues Interagency and park passes following RM #22 and all applicable management directives. Manages accountable property with appropriate safeguards and security. (2) Provides directions, information, and orientation regarding services or activities of interest to the public. Serves as a front-line representative greeting customers and answering questions. Educates visitors regarding rules, regulations, and safety concerns to gain compliance. Direct customers with problems, questions, or complaints; (3) Explain the significance of an area's facility's natural, cultural, historic, or other resources. Assists the public in planning visits to and recommending activities in the area. Respond to mail, email, and telephone information requests; 4) Issues permits for overnight visitors (backpackers, paddlers, boaters) to comply with park rules and regulations.
Area Information: This position will require living in the local area and working at the mainland visitor center in Houghton, Michigan. Houghton is a town of approximately 6,000 residents and houses Michigan Technological University. The University is known for its Engineering and Forestry Program and has an average enrollment of 7,000. The bordering town of Hancock has a residential population of 4,300 and houses Finlandia University with an average enrollment of 400 students. This International University is known for its Art and Design program.
Housing is not supplied - the average cost of a one-bedroom facility in the nearby area ranges from $400 to $700 per month.The area houses two hospitals, numerous clinics, three fitness centers, two performing arts centers, numerous eateries and a few major department stores. This is a tourist destination which offers scenic overlooks, bike paths, hiking, backpacking, canoeing, kayaking, and boating opportunities, countless lakes and miles of Lake Superior shoreline.
Qualifications
All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-08/26/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this position at the GS-04 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of general experience. defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates my ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of a Recreation Fee Clerk (Fee Collection). My general experience includes collecting and handling cash, checks, and credit cards and can accurately complete standard mathematical calculations, greeting the public, providing information, and giving directions. You must include hours per week worked.-OR-
EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two (2) years of education above high school (60 semester hours or 90 quarter hours). This education was obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college, or university. IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must submit a copy of your transcripts that identifies for each course the college or university, semester or quarter hours earned, grade received, and date completed. If you are qualifying based on education and you do not submit specific coursework information as described, your application will be rated not qualified for consideration. (A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected).-OR-
Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, six (6) months of the general experience described above (50% of the experience requirement), and one (1) year of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) as specified above, equals 100% of the total requirement. (You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts as indicated above).
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
You will NOT be considered under Pathways unless you provide supporting information from your school. Documentation may be provided in letter format from your academic advisor, school counselor, admission office, etc. to prove enrollment OR it may be provided in the form of several official documents from your school such as a copy of your official transcripts and a copy of your class schedule for next semester. Copies of documents from your school website are acceptable if they contain all relevant information as listed above. Letters from advisors or other school officials must be on school letterhead.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
