This position is located at Bureau of Engraving and Printing, within the Office of Facilities Support. As a Sheet Metal Mechanic, you will perform a variety of tasks relative to the design, fabrication, modification, repair, assembly, and installation of sheet metal items and production equipment parts and assemblies.
Duties
As a Sheet Metal Mechanic, you will:
- Fabricate, install, and repair various specialized heating and drying equipment, VOC duct systems, louvers, UV oven reflectors and shutters, etc.
- Repair and replace damaged sections of security roll door curtains on building entrances and section entrances.
- Perform repair work on Bureau vehicles.
- Provide support for Machinists, Electricians, Electro-Machinists, and Stationary Engineers to troubleshoot and repair production and building support equipment.
- Provide preventative maintenance repairs to all production, facility support, and shop equipment.
- Modify new and existing production equipment parts and fabricate precision fit parts as required.
Qualifications

Physical Requirements:
Must work in close proximity to grease, oil, solvents, ink, high noise levels, heat, and moving machinery. Work is usually dirty, dusty, greasy, and performed under conditions affected by cold, heat and dampness. The incumbent must be able to climb and work from ladders, scaffolds, platforms and lifts up to 150 feet, be able to work standing, stooping, kneeling, or bending, and is frequently required to lift and carry tools and equipment weighting up to 75 lbs. Incumbent occasionally works in strained and tiring positions, and must possess good vision with no color blindness. Incumbent is exposed to possibilities of scrapes, burns, bruises, and falls from ladders and scaffolds. Incumbent is exposed to caustic soda, inks, acids, and various types of chemicals. Incumbent will be required to work off shifts in order to provide 24-hour facility and production coverage and will be required to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime.

Work is performed both inside and outside. Some duties are performed in cramped positions and close quarters, at various heights on ladders and lifts up to 150 feet. Incumbent is in close proximity and contact with solvents, inks and chemicals, high noise levels, heat/cold, dust, dirt, moving equipment or machinery and subject to burns.

This job requires a four-year apprenticeship or equivalent training in trade skills, theory, blueprint, specification reading, drafting, and trade related mathematics. Incumbent must possess and be able to demonstrate practical trade experience and knowledge sufficient to be considered for this position.
