This position is part of the Facilities Management, Government Publishing Office in Washington, District of Columbia
Duties
Assigns daily work assignments and check work in progress upon completion. Assures that safety and housekeeping rules are followed.
Fabricate and install sheet metal objects and systems which have various combinations of features (i.e., cornices, canopies, transition elbow, oblique truncated or cones).
Develop pattern layouts, cuts, forms, and joints. Assemble and install items and systems such as heating, air conditions and ventilation ducts, pipes and conduits.
Manufacture and install cylinder, square, and rectangular shaped objects. Install, repair, or modify all types of metal roof guttering, fabricate as types of metal walls, wire mesh screen, buildings, skylights, flashing and fire doors.
Perform electric welding, acetylene welding, spot welding, brazing, silver and regular soldering, a needed.
Requirements

- Males born after 12/03/59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- A one-year Probationary period may be required.
- Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain Suitability security clearance.
- Selectee must pass a physical examination prior to appointment.
- Selectee must meet pre-employment requirements prior to appointment.
- Physical - Effort: Duties as required by assignment; the incumbent may be involved with heavy lifting in excess of 60 pounds.
- Physical - Effort: Duties require prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, crawling, stretching, and reaching above the shoulders and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
- Working Conditions: Work is done inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty and greasy. Mechanics are sometimes required to make installations and repairs in areas where fumes may be present.
- Working Conditions: There is frequent exposure to the possibility of uncomfortable heat conditions. Mechanics are frequently exposed to the
possibility of strains, cuts, scrapes, bruises, bums and infections.
- Working Conditions: Mechanics are occasionally exposed to the possibility of broken bones and other injuries from falls from scaffolds, ladders, or lifting equipment.
Qualifications
To qualify for the position, you must meet the following requirements: Applicants must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties typically required of a(n) SHEET METAL MECHANIC LEADER.
Applicants must meet the following SCREEN OUT ELEMENT/JOB ELEMENT#1 below, to be considered eligible for this position: Ability to Do the Work of the Sheet Metal Mechanic Leader without More Than Normal Supervision. Applicants must have the experience and/or training of a sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties typically required of a Sheet Metal Mechanic (Leader). These duties require skill in employee supervision or leading a team, training, performance evaluation input, addressing conduct issues, relaying proper work methods, and the ability to obtain the information for the supervisor. Applicants must also have skill in planning and execution, meeting deadlines, and adapting to work conditions and production schedule when problems arise. These duties include:
Manage a team of Sheetmetal Workers
Operating a plasma cutter.
Fabricating ductwork, metals according to instructions, specifications, layout by hand parallel, radial, and triangular pattern developments; and using a variety of welding processes such as stick, tig, mig, brazing silver, acetylene, and soft soldering and hand tools.
Skilled in determining Metal properties (i.e., lead, galvanized iron, black iron, etc.).
Basic Computer Operations
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education
Substitution of education in lieu of specialized experience may not be used for this grade level.
