National Defense University (NDU) supports the joint warfighter by providing rigorous Joint Professional Military Education to members of the U.S. Armed Forces and select others in order to develop leaders who have the ability to operate and creatively think in an unpredictable and complex world. This is a Title 10 Excepted Service Appointment. Appointment is not to exceed 3 years with the possibility for extension.

Duties

Duties: The incumbent of this position serves as a faculty member at the Dwight D. Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy (ES). The ES is a component of the National Defense University (NDU). The ES mission is to "educate joint warfighters and other national security leaders for strategic leadership and success in analyzing national security strategy and in evaluating, marshaling, and managing resources in order to execute that strategy." The ES presents a ten-month course of study to a student body of approximately 300 mid-career military officers and civilian U.S. government officials, select international officers, and industry fellows, leading to an accredited degree of Master of Science in National Resource Strategy. The ES faculty includes a mix of civilian academics, serving military officers, and officials from selected U.S. government agencies. This position entails multiple activities related to supporting the mission and academic programs of NDU and the ES. These activities are aligned with the Teaching, Research, Engagement, Service and Accountability (TRESA) performance evaluation model. MAJOR DUTIES: The primary duty of a faculty member hired under this position is to teach graduate-level courses related to economics, business, and industry. The faculty member applies instructional approaches that stimulate student engagement through facilitated seminar discussion and experiential learning. Faculty also: Develop curriculum relevant to ES courses on economics, business, and industry. In addition to graduate-level courses related to economic, business, and industry, prepare and conduct graduate-level seminar instruction in ES multidisciplinary courses related to national security and resource strategy. In this regard: Must be willing to team teach an Industry Study course examining one of 20 industries and their relationships to the U.S. national innovation and defense industrial base. Some courses require extensive planning and execution of domestic and international field study experiences involving budgetary, logistic, and administrative program management and leadership skills. May also include multidisciplinary capstone or resourcing exercises. Participate in the planning and development of the ES curriculum. Recommend lecture topics, course content, educational methods, and other curriculum requirements. Based on the needs of the ES, conduct research in support of the school mission and program outcomes. Assess student performance against standards outlined in applicable rubrics and provide timely and meaningful feedback to students in accordance with ES policy and timelines. Mentor, counsel, and advise students in the role of primary faculty advisor, including supporting advisees' orientation to the school, tracking progress, and providing input on the year-end assessment. Serve as research adviser to students performing research on topic of academic interest relevant to national security decision-making and the Defense Industrial Base. In this role, assist students in consultations with high level officials of the Department of Defense and other government departments, senior executives of business firms, and leaders of the civilian academic community. Engage in formal service to the ES and NDU, , including participation on ES and NDU working groups. Maintain professional relationships in their field and with existing ES stakeholders in support of the ES mission. Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Must be able and willing to travel both domestically and internationally. Travel is seldom required. Less than 25% of the time.

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: A master's degree (doctorate or terminal degree preferred) relevant to economics, business administration, or a closely related discipline. A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching and curriculum development in an institution of higher education. Professional experience in a field related to political economy, microeconomics and/or business strategy, such as (1) assessing the domestic and global economic environment to inform national security; and/or (2) evaluating domestic and international industries using standard business tools; and/or (3) developing policy options in support of evaluating, marshaling, and managing resources to achieve national security objectives, such as fiscal and monetary policy; and/or (4) expertise in an industry sector relevant to U.S. national security. CRITERIA FOR DETERMINING ACADEMIC RANK: Assistant Professor must possess an earned doctoral degree (preferred) or equivalent terminal degree (preferred), or an earned master's degree in economics, business administration, or a closely related discipline. Individual must have professional experience in a field related to political economy, microeconomics, business strategy and/or an industry sector relevant to U.S. national security. Individual must also have documented full-time teaching experience at a regionally accredited university or college. Associate Professor must possess an earned doctoral degree or equivalent terminal degree in economics, business administration, or a closely related discipline. Individual must have significant professional experience in a field related to political economy, microeconomics, business strategy and/or an industry sector relevant to U.S. national security. Individual must also have documented full-time graduate-level teaching experience at a regionally accredited university or college for at least five years. Professor requires an earned doctoral degree or equivalent terminal degree in economics, business administration, or a closely related discipline. Individual must have extensive professional experience in a field related to political economy, microeconomics, business strategy and/or an industry sector relevant to U.S. national security. Individual must have (1) at least eight years, or the instructional equivalent, of full-time teaching experience at a regionally accredited university, of which at least three years must be at the graduate level; (2) a record of scholarship excellence, leadership among peers, and recognition with a sustained record of contributions to the curriculum; and (3) a record of engagement and advancement of institutional partnerships, relationships that leverage cross-component and mission success, and networks of influence that contribute to national security strategy and resourcing. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Education Requirement: Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education or, international equivalent, (doctorate preferred) in a discipline directly related to economics, business administration, or a closely related discipline. Successful applicants without a terminal degree must agree to enroll, and show progress, in a terminal degree program during the initial term of appointment.

Official Transcripts: Official transcripts are not required at the time of application; however, if the position has a positive degree requirement, qualifying based on education alone or in combination with experience, transcripts must be verified PRIOR to appointment, if selected for the role.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements.
