Organizational Location: This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Special Operations Group (SOG), BORTAC Unit, El Paso, TX.

Duties

This position is to provide basic general maintenance and basic welding and basic carpentry work, duties and responsibilities that support Special Operations Group (SOG), as well as provide assistance to SOG Range Officer with maintaining ranges and enforcing adherence. This position starts at an hourly rate of $24.24 (WG-08, Step 1) to $28.27 (WG-08, Step 5). In this Maintenance Worker position, you will become a key member of Homeland Security professionals. Typical work assignments may include: Maintaining ranges to ensure all training venues, buildings, and grounds are clean, clear of debris and overgrowth of vegetation, and in good working order; Ensuring range towers, rappel towers, shoot houses, defensive tactics buildings, breaching facade, firearms training areas and classrooms are in safe and proper operation working order; Training supplies and required training equipment items are available at the ranges for use by agents Scheduling of variety of training at Range Eleven (11) and serving as a secondary point of contact (POC) responsible for coordinating with Fort Bliss personnel and resolving operational, training, and safety issues.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. To minimally qualify for the WG-08 grade level you must meet the Screen Out Element(s): Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. To meet the Screen Out Element(s), you should have experience performing the following duties: Performing routine maintenance such as painting, grounds keeping, power washing, and cleaning Preparing estimates for repairs and maintains records Operates forklift, tractors, and other heavy machinery Inspect and repair damaged training apparatus, and leave worksite in clean and usable condition Conducting minor metal working such as cutting, weld repairs etc. Using and maintaining hand and power tools, such as screwdrivers, pliers and drills. Failure to meet these Screen Out Element(s) will result in an ineligible rating. In addition to the experience described above, you will also be evaluated on the basis of your overall level of competency (knowledge, skills, and abilities) in the following areas: Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic) Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. (Includes blue print reading) Measurement and Layout Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment Troubleshooting Knowledge of materials and use of measuring instruments Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must: Meet all qualification requirements, including education if applicable to this position, subject to verification at any stage of the application process; and Meet all applicable Time in Grade requirements (current federal employees must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent grade band in the federal service) by 08/16/2024. The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. Current and former federal employees may be required to serve or complete a probationary period.
