This position is part of the Plant Operations, Government Publishing Office in Washington, District of Columbia

Duties

Sets-up, adjusts, and operates the following equipment: Stahl folder machines, Heidelberg ST-350 (Mueller Martini) inserter/saddle stitch equipment and other equipment as assigned. Inspects equipment to make sure lubrication requirements are satisfied and units are in good working order. Installs, and replaces when required, stripping and cover material, laminate, foil, adhesives, and other supplies. Sets up the machine by synchronizing the multiple workstations and making precise adjustments. Monitors machine control panels and machine operation to identify processing problems.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is Required.
  • Selectee must pass all preemployment requirements prior to appointment.
  • Males born after 12/03/59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Selectee may be required to serve a one year probationary period.
  • Physical Effort: The work involves standing for prolonged periods of time while operating or monitoring equipment and lifting items up to 60 lbs, some stooping, bending, and reaching to install material, make adjustments, etc.
  • Working Conditions: Duties are performed in a production environment that is well lit, heated, and ventilated. The area is exposed to low frequency noise generated by Bindery equipment.
  • Selectee must successfully pass suitability/ nonsensitive low risk background investigation.
  • Drug testing is required.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Bookbinder, you must meet the following requirements: Applicants must meet the following Screen-Out element, Job Element #1: to be considered for this position. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the online questionnaire. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT below is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. The screen-out element for this position is: Ability to do the work of a Bookbinder without more than normal supervision (SCREEN OUT), to be considered for this position. Applicants must have experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to independently perform the duties typically required of a Bookbinder. These duties require knowledge and technical skills in: setting up, operating, adjusting, and maintaining bindery equipment. In addition to meeting the SCREENOUT, the selectee must possess the following JOB ELEMENTS:Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal SupervisionAbility to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Other Than Blueprint Reading)Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of MaterialsKnowledge of Specific Equipment, Machinery, Structure, or Components That Are InvolvedTechnical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)Use of Measuring Instruments Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
