About the Position: The Safety Specialist conducts inspections, manages selected major sub-programs, does workplace monitoring, investigates accidents, provides safety instruction and does other tasks necessary to Support the safety program.

Duties

Perform safety surveys of the hospital and support facilities. Prepare written reports of inspections detailing problems observed, standards violated and recommended corrective action. Independently conduct surveys to identify and evaluate risk potential, establish criteria for training programs, provide technical assistance to senior management physicians and nurses. Investigate personal injuries and property damage incidents and accidents to determine causes and recommend corrective actions required to prevent a recurrence. Advise department heads, supervisors, employees, and patient care personnel on a wide variety of safety matters to eliminate hazards to staff and patients. Review building plans and specifications for construction/repair projects for conformance to applicable safety, health, and fire protection standards and to ensure that construction methods do not endanger personnel or facilities. Conduct safety training for supervisors and employees.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • You may be authorized to Telework on a Situational basis.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Temporary Duty (TDY) may be required 5%.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: - Perform inspections in all areas to insure conformance to safety, occupational health and fire protection regulations. - Conduct safety training classes, promote safety campaigns through oral presentations and post safety displays and publish mishap prevention articles. - Investigate workplace incidents in order to determine corrective action. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09). OR Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology. OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages. You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: Accident/Mishap and Hazard Investigation and ReportingSafety and Occupational Health (SOH) Hazard IdentificationSafety EngineeringTeaching Others Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
