The employee will serve as a Pathology Specialist at the LTC Charles S. Kettles VA Medical Center, in Ann Arbor, MI. This position manages the operations of the Surgical Pathology, Mohs, and Autopsy services, integrating and educating residents and representing these services in a variety of interactions with clinical physicians and residents, nursing personnel, hospital administrative and other personnel.
Duties

Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Managing almost all daily surgical pathology functions under the supervision of the pathologist.
Performing autopsies in rotation with senior staff under the supervision of a pathologist
Maintaining regulatory compliance related to his/her duties
Participating in the orientation and training of new employees and new techniques and procedure in anatomic pathology grossing and autopsy.
Coordinating the integration of new methodologies into the grossing and autopsy laboratory.
Preparing work areas for inspection and participating in the inspection process as required by his/her supervisor.
Participating in the maintenance of a teaching collection of gross photographs and wet tissue museum specimens.
Developing or participating in the development of anatomic pathology grossing protocols.
Educating and training residents in pathology, other medical specialties and medical students, regarding the practice of surgical pathology grossing and autopsy.
Inspecting the permission form, reviewing the medical record, preparing external and internal description, sectioning and ordering of special studies.
Performing other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT - Applicants must possess a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
AND
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: managing all daily surgical pathology functions under the supervision of the pathologist; experience with Mohs program and procedures; preparing work areas for inspection; training new employees in anatomic pathology grossing and autopsy; performing autopsies; and describing microscopic slides and correlating the gross and microscopic pathology.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work requires long period of standing while performing gross examinations and teaching others to do so, recurring bending over when performing frozen sections and autopsies, occasional lifting of heavy items (bodies) and above average dexterity in dissecting specimens and cutting frozen sections.
