This is an Inpatient & Outpatient Professional Coding position.
Duties
Assign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the ICD-10-CM, PCS coding books.
Perform quantitative analysis and checks medical record for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with regulatory requirements..
Analyze and interpret documentation in record, ensuring accuracy, internal consistency and correlation of recorded data.
Perform limited utilization review of inpatient records to assure the diagnosis responsible for the length of stay is appropriately identified and the secondary diagnoses are sequenced properly to assure maximum allocation under the DRG system.
Identify and document any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
- This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.

Specialized Experience
GS-06: One year of specialized experience which includes: Performing technically complex medical coding functions utilizing International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) coding resources; and Analyze and abstract records rendered in both the outpatient and inpatient settings for coding ICD-10, Evaluation and Management coding (E&M) and CPT. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
