Duties

You will accomplish work in accordance with instructions provided by higher graded employees. You will adhere to heavy mobile equipment trade safety practices and guidelines in completing assignments. You will carry out pre-repair inspection on complete combat vehicles, tactical vehicles, components, assemblies, and systems to determine economic reparability and depth of repair. You will adjust settings (e.g., voltage units, current control units, engine idle, brakes, transmission linkages) in accordance with manufacturer's manuals. You will disassemble, repair, or replace parts (e.g., injection valves, cylinder sleeves, pistons, rings, connecting rods, bearings, gaskets, crankshafts) on heavy equipment gas or diesel engines. You will install, measure, and fit heavy mobile equipment components (e.g., fan belts, hose, oil, air, fuel, coolant filters, pistons, valves, bearings, gears, bearings) for operational performance. You will check and annotate work orders to make certain all heavy mobile equipment repairs or modifications are completed.

  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.

  • You will frequently lift and carry items unassisted weighing up to 40 pounds and often exert similar efforts in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You may be required to work overtime; you may be required to work overtime on an emergency basis.
  • This position requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. The employee is required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government motor vehicle operator's license, other applicable license(s) and/or authorization(s) to operate assigned equipment.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You must be willing and able to accept a term position of more than one year but less than four years.
  • This position requires a State Criminal History Repository (SCHR) check to be completed on any person selected for this position. You must willing and able to submit to a SCHR check.
  • Term appointments may be extended up to 8 years at the discretion of management and in accordance with applicable regulations.

Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO DO THE WORK WITH NO MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION. I have the ability to perform common Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic tasks to include Services, inspects, maintains and determines cause of malfunctions and makes repairs, or overhauls to motor transport equipment and variety of heavy mobile equipment/vehicles including their major systems. Service and performs diagnoses, modification, overhaul, repair and maintenance of complex electrical devices, equipment and components, including those which are integrated groupings of electrical and related controls containing printed and miniaturized electronic control circuitry.
