Duties
Joining Customs & Border Protection will allow you to use your expertise in operations research to advise management on a wide range of program activities which will impact the total Customs Agency. Apply for this exciting opportunity to strengthen the Department's ability to perform homeland security functions by identifying potentially conflicting organizational requirements. This position starts at a salary of $45,146.00 (GS-05, Step 1) to $72,703.00 (GS-07, Step 10) with promotion potential to $128,956 (GS-12 Step 10).

Qualifications
Basic Requirement: 4-year Degree in operations research; or at least 24 semester hours in a combination of operations research, mathematics, probability, statistics, mathematical logic, science, or subject-matter courses requiring substantial competence in college-level mathematics or statistics. At least 3 of the 24 semester hours must have been in calculus.
Courses acceptable for qualifying for operations research positions may have been taken in departments other than Operations Research, e.g., Engineering (usually Industrial Engineering), Science, Economics, Mathematics, Statistics, or Management Science. Experience: You qualify for the GS-5 grade level if you have successfully completed the basic requirements described in the individual occupational requirements above.
GS-7: You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience as described below AND meet the basic requirement listed above.
Experience: You qualify for the GS-7 grade level if you possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
Performing portions of technical and administrative projects
Developing a wide variety of operations research techniques, methodologies, and procedures
Applying of a basic knowledge of the fundamentals of operations research
Performing the operations research study process
Performing technical and administrative projects involving gathering and summarizing test data; verifying data for accuracy; tabulating data; performing basic mathematical or statistical calculations; reviewing a variety of narrative and statistical data to prepare reports; and conducting analyses of data to support conclusions

GS-7 Education Substitution: Successful completion of one year (or more) of full-time graduate education from an accredited college or university may substitute for the experience required at this level. This education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities. Check with your school to determine how many credit hours comprise a year of graduate education. If that information is not available, use 18 semester or 27 quarter hours.
OR
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA): You must have completed the requirements for a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with a grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or have a class standing in the upper third of a graduating class or major subdivision, or membership in a national scholastic honor society. Combination of Graduate Education and Professional Experience: Combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. Only graduate level education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level may be combined with experience. For example, an applicant with 6 months of appropriate experience equivalent to GS-7 (50 percent of the experience requirement for GS-9) and 27 semester hours of appropriate graduate education (50 percent of the education requirement for GS-9, in excess of that required for GS-7) would be qualified for a GS-9 position (assuming that there is no evidence that the attended college or university requires more than 18 semester hours as equivalent to a year of graduate study).

Residency: There is a residency requirement for all applicants not currently employed by CBP. Individuals are required to have physically resided in the United States or its protectorates (as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years. If you do not meet the residency requirement and you have been physically located in a foreign location for more than two of the last five years, you may request an exception to determine if you are eligible for a residency waiver by meeting one or more of the following conditions:
Working for the U.S. Government as a federal civilian or as a member of the military
A dependent who was authorized to accompany a federal civilian or member of the military who was working for the U.S. government
Participation in a study abroad program sponsored by a U.S. affiliated college or university
Working as a contractor, intern, consultant or volunteer supporting the U.S. government
Probationary Period: All employees new to the federal government must serve a one year probationary period during the first year of his/her initial permanent federal appointment to determine fitness for continued employment.
