The position performs a wide variety of work that requires significant physical effort and knowledge of infection control and hazardous waste procedures to comply with both healthcare and housekeeping industry and safety requirements. In addition to all aspects of WG-3566 Housekeeping Aid Position, this position also operates the facility's San-i-Pak which requires a valid driver's license. The position is located at the Sioux Falls VA Healthcare System.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Required to utilize a one-and-a-half ton truck for the transportation of wastes from the VA Hospital to the San-i-Pak area up to four times daily. Required to be certified for forklift operations for a lift capacity of 3000 lbs. in order to process, store, load gay lords and bales of cardboard, mixed paper, newsprint, magazines, plastic, tin and aluminum for transport. Monitors all wastes for appropriate categorization, documentation and weights. Loads and transports all wastes generated from the VA Medical Center, Regional Office, Research and Outbuildings for final disposal, sterilization, incineration, shred or general waste disposal. Required to disinfect and exchange biohazard (red) barrels, safely load, transport, manifest and treat biohazard waste from community facilities through sharing agreements. Maintain the cleanliness of the San-i-Pak and adjacent areas which includes routine scheduled cleaning, disinfecting of carts, barrels, San-i-Pak control room and regulated medical waste cooler. Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the recycle center which includes overall organization, cleanliness, appropriate segregation, baling, storage, shipping and supplies. Provides minor preventative maintenance on all equipment, machinery and transport vehicles, keeping alert to equipment malfunctions, placing work orders, maintaining supplies. Cleans floors (rugs, mats, carpet, vinyl, tile, etc.) using heavy industrial type vacuum cleaners, automatic scrubbers, buffers, burnishers, sweepers, extractors and shampooers. Strips and refinishes appropriate floors. Sweeps, dust mops, damp mops, scrubs and buffs various floors. Performs minor preventative maintenance on this equipment (adjusts, cleans, and changes attachments, equipment and supplies). DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. Physical Requirements: You will be asked to participate in a pre-employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre-employment process for this position. Questions about demands or environmental factors may be addressed at the time of evaluation or examination. Working Conditions: Incumbent is subject to temperature variations - hot, humid, wet conditions in the summer and cold, damp conditions in the winter. Has regular contact with contaminated recyclables and regulated medical wastes. Personal protective equipment is mandatory and reduces the risk of regulated medical waste exposure. May be subject to disagreeable odors created during the treatment process of both regulated medical waste and recycling. Driving conditions will vary during the seasons; potential slippery roads and/or adverse conditions may exist. Work is normally performed in a clean, well-lit, heated and ventilated building. He/she is exposed to noise, vibrations and other potential physical harm from operating power equipment and tools. He/she must use PPE appropriately as they are subject to skin irritation and respiratory symptoms from chemical cleaning solutions. He/she is routinely exposed to disagreeable odors such as feces, vomit, and blood, etc. He/she is also routinely exposed to BBP/OIM, MDROs, contagious diseases and other infectious organisms that can cause physical harm and/or death (if PPE is not used appropriately or is defective). He/she is exposed to potential injury and contamination from sharps, needles, etc. He/she is exposed to predatory pests such as bed bugs, lice and scabies.
