This position is located in the Bureau of Global Public Affairs, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Media Strategy, Office of Press Operations, which performs strategic and tactical planning to the Administration's priority foreign policy goals. Serves as the Senior Press Officer in the Media Support Unit (MSU) providing expert monitoring and analysis of national and international traditional and social media to inform senior leadership about current and emerging trends.
Duties
Provides advice to the Department’s senior leadership regarding media coverage, content and focus.
Coordinates preparations for press briefings, press conferences, and press interviews, including tasking Department-wide public affairs officers to provide press guidance for the Spokesperson’s use during on-camera briefings.
Serves as the backup to the Unit director as needed including training new staff, coordinating schedules, representation in meetings, and other special projects.
Monitors ongoing foreign affairs issues and policy developments as they relate to the Department 's public affairs initiatives, and advises the Spokesperson, principal Deputies, and the Director accordingly.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
- Incumbent will be subject to random drug testing.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
Qualifications
Applicants must meet all the required qualification requirements described below by the closing date of this announcement. NOTE: Applicants must meet time-in-grade and time after competitive appointment requirements, by the closing date of this announcement. Time-In-Grade Requirements: Federal applicants must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade to satisfy time-in-grade restrictions, per 5CFR 300, Subpart F.
Applicants must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service which provided the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Qualifying specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
Experience analyzing and evaluating materials as they relate to public affairs issues and media engagement.
Experience evaluating effectiveness of communications efforts by analyzing public reactions and/or understanding of programs and policies.
Experience developing communication strategies/dissemination of information relating to U.S. foreign policy priorities.
There is no substitute of education for specialized experience for the GS-13 position.
