The United States Attorney's Office for the District of Oregon is responsible for representing the United States in virtually all litigation involving the United States in the District of Oregon. To learn more, visit: https://www.justice.gov/usao-or. This position is located in Portland, Oregon.

Duties

This position is located in the Civil Division. Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) located in the Civil Division of our Portland offices will be responsible for representing the United States and its departments, agencies, and employees in civil actions brought against the United States at both the trial and appellate levels. The Civil Division's defensive cases include suits alleging negligence under the Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA), including medical malpractice; allegations of unlawful discrimination in federal employment; challenges to agency actions under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA); suits seeking release of records under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Privacy Act; the defense of government officials sued in their individual capacities for constitutional violations (Bivens actions); responses to prisoner habeas petitions; and motions to quash subpoenas that fail to comply with applicable federal regulations. The Civil Division also handles some affirmative civil rights matters in which it seeks enforcement of statutes that prohibit discrimination in areas such as housing, education, or employment. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress. Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. NOTE: The security clearance level represents the highest level attainable. The type of clearance varies by appointment. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district-specific information. Selective Service: If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law.   • You must be a United States Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

  • J.D. degree and active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction) required.
  • Type of Position: This is a term position not-to-exceed 2 years. This position may be extended or made permanent without further competition.
  • Must reside in the district to which appointed or within 25 miles thereof. See 28 U.S.C. 545 for district specific information.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 1 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Although a Civil AUSA may receive assignments in any of the above subject-matter areas, the selected AUSA should expect to primarily handle defensive cases involving medical malpractice, other torts, and employment discrimination. AUSAs should be capable of managing numerous ongoing matters; juggling court appearances, depositions and deadlines for discovery and pleadings in a collegial, supportive environment. Applicants should have experience appearing in court, arbitrations, and/or depositions. Applicant should possess superior research and writing abilities, with the ability to prepare high-quality, persuasive pleadings. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.
