As a Medical Instrument Technician (Surgical), you will assist in operations, under the supervision of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical personnel. You will also help set up the operating room, prepare and transport patients for surgery, adjust lights and equipment, pass instruments and other supplies to surgeons and surgeon's assistants, hold retractors, and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.
Duties
Nursing Operations
We integrate cutting-edge technology into everyday practice. Our Perioperative team includes state-of-the-art surgical procedures Da Vinci Robotic surgery system, and the Intra-Operative Magnetic Resonance Imaging suite. If you are selected for this position, your responsibilities will include:
Perioperative Support
Provides technical assistance to surgeons, surgical nurses, or anesthesiologists.
Prepares, organizes, and maintains highly complex sterile surgical set-ups.
Prepares patients for surgery, including positioning patients on the operating table and covering them with sterile surgical drapes to prevent exposure.
Counts sponges, needles, and instruments before and after an operation.
Maintains a proper sterile field during surgical procedures.
Monitors and continually assess operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs.
Functions as a second circulator for complex surgical procedures including assisting the surgeon and/or another assistant during the operative procedure by carrying out technical tasks other than cutting, clamping, and suturing of tissue.
Prepares, cares for, and disposes of tissue specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
Prepares dressings or bandages and applies or assists with their application following surgery.
Helps transport the patient to the recovery room.
Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of the room; assists in prepping the room for the next patient.
Supplies & Equipment
Identifies, assembles handles, manages, and operates specialized complex medical equipment such as microscopes, lasers, urologic equipment, recording devices, and other operating room supplies and equipment; recognizes potentially hazardous situations and takes corrective actions.
Inspects and performs all recommended tests to assure that equipment meets operational, sterilization, and/or cleanliness requirements.
Assumes responsibility for the accountability of all surgical instruments and equipment during the surgical procedure.
Utilizes universal precautions and follows all infection control policies and procedures when handling supplies and equipment.
Washes and sterilize equipment, using germicides and sterilizers.
Cleans and restocks the operating room, gather and places equipment and supplies, and arranges instruments according to instructions, such as preference cards.
Coordinates necessary repairs on specialized medical or laboratory equipment.
Assists in training residents, medical students, nursing students, operating room technology students, and new OR staff in the operation of equipment, sterile technique, handling of instruments, and OR procedures.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizenship requirement or proof of being a U.S. National must be met by closing date.

Qualifications
You qualify at the GS-09 level if you meet the following qualification requirement:
You must demonstrate in your resume at least one (1) year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-08 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: prepare patients for surgery, including covering them with sterile surgical drapes; provide technical assistance to surgeons, surgical nurses, or anesthesiologists; complete sterilization and aseptic techniques of surgical equipment and conducting an inventory of surgical equipment and supplies.
