This position is located on either a Forest Service Research or National Forest unit. The position performs duties in support of the wildlife science program.

Duties

The work performed is passive, remote sensing/monitoring with little or no animal handling. Work involves hiking through the woods, deploying and retrieving cameras and audio recorders, with limited opportunity to directly observe or handle animals. The incumbent performs any of the assignments listed below related to all types of wildlife, including small mammals, birds, carnivores, megafauna, fish, reptiles, amphibians, etc. Individually, as a crewmember, or as part of a team, supports wildlife community studies. Conducts field surveys of birds, mammals, or herpetofauna requiring specialized experience identifying focal species depending on research focus. Performs fieldwork associated with a research project on the status and distribution of wildlife species using specialized equipment. Work involves installing and monitoring camera stations and audio recorders, radio telemetry work, and helping with scat detection dog surveys. Ensures that a sufficient supply of reagents, standards and controls are available at all times by ordering an adequate supply from commercial sources or preparing a variety of specialized solutions or reagents. Using established procedures, calibrates, controls, and maintains a variety of instrumentation and field equipment. When calibration falls outside acceptable limits, incumbent uses independent judgment in adjusting either the procedure or the mechanical device used in the determination to bring the procedures into good quality control. Conducts surveys to determine occupancy and identifies multiple species by sight and sound. Identifies vegetation and animal sign by sight. Assists in the scheduling and organizing of surveys. Using prescribed procedures, the incumbent resolves regular and recurring problems concerning survey work. Collects data on abundance, population structure, habitat use, movements, and behavior of species. Routinely communicates progress of field projects and assignments to supervisor. Incumbent may also assist with development of reports after higher-graded employees have refined and verified the data and analyzed the results. Records field data in a legible manner. Maintains field equipment in good working condition. Assists in the training of lower-level employees. Works with project collaborators and stakeholders in order to ensure cooperation, research integrity, and the achievement of agency objectives.

Qualifications

Provide course descriptions as necessary. GS-06: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5). Examples of specialized experience include: Completing wildlife habitat project work, and/or assessing wildlife habitat environments, requirements, and inhabitants; and collecting field data on wildlife habitat and vegetation, species condition, location, and status for habitat management and improvement plans. Compiling biological data obtained from aerial and ground surveys to determine vegetation type, wildlife and livestock use. GS-06: There is no substitution of education for experience for this position. Selective Placement Factors: The incumbent must have normal color vision and normal hearing. The incumbent must have a valid state driver's license. Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods necessary to obtain, use, and interpret data from remote sensing sources, including aircrafts and satellites. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
