This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Competitive Service Positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Motor Vehicle Operator (Cemetary Caretaker) with Department of Public Works located at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Duties

Perform cemetery caretaker duties consisting of care, maintenance and landscaping of the cemetery. Sign burial permits after interment and makes reports, e.g., burial record map, burial permit, technical (burial) data which includes grave location, burial section, grave number, name of deceased, data of burial, etc. Act as a guide to visitors, pointing out and enumerating events, dates of importance, etc. Operate vehicles with gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to 32,000 pounds to transport/haul personnel, materials, branches, shrubs, salt mixture, leaves, dirt, etc. on and off the installation. Operate tractor mowers and riding mowers. Assist morticians with funerals, e.g., control parking of vehicles, directs visitors, etc.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Incumbent must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License.
  • Incumbent must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and maintain a Government Driver's License.
  • This position requires overtime during inclement weather for snow removal duties.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.

Qualifications

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Motor Vehicle Operator (Cemetary Caretaker) ~ without more than normal supervision. - 1) Operating van trucks and stake trucks; 2) Monitoring fluid levels on vehicles; 3) Washing a vehicle. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Work requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, and kneeling to perform cemetery caretaker work; requires effort to operate vehicles and to attach equipment to tractors and mowers. Frequently lifts heavy material such as bags of cement, large tree limbs, etc., weighing 50 pounds or more. Lifts and aligns marker stones weighing 200 pounds or more with assistance. Working Conditions: Work is usually outside with exposure to all weather conditions such as sun, wind, rain, ice, extreme cold, etc. Exposed to dirt, dust and sometimes to chemical sprays. Subject to cuts, scrapes, bruises and serious injury from power mowers, tractors and other powered equipment. Subject to contact with dirt, mud, snow, ice and water. Incumbent drives in all type of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. Safety shoes, glasses helmet, belts, ear muffs, and ear plugs will be worn.

Education
