The Medical Service Mission is to lead satisfied staff dedicated to providing high quality patient centered care here at STVHCS, a great tertiary training and research Veteran's Hospital. The Health Technician supports this mission through administrative dependability, direct patient care, and support of their Section's clinical activities. The health technician assists in providing diagnostic and therapeutic medical care and services under the guidelines of the staff dermatologists.
Duties
Assists physicians with performing biopsies and excisions/Mohs. Prepares procedure area; assures patient chair, table and stand are sterilized. Assists with drawing of local anesthetics (lidocaine). Sets up procedure trays, surgical instruments and performs pre-procedure vital signs. Assists in cleanup of surgical instruments, cleans patient care areas (chair/trays, etc) and assists in the set-up of surgical trays for the next procedure Assists staff and resident physicians in performing other dermatological duties including, but not limited to, performing shave, and punch biopsies and dressing changes/suture removals. Maintains exam/procedure rooms by cleaning the table and changing paper drape after each patient encounter. Cleans procedure tray after each use and restocks trays with appropriate equipment for next visit. Applies steri-strips and/or dressings to patient after procedures. Prepares patient exam rooms; to include wiping down tables and replacing soiled paper after patient encounters. Stocks rooms with gowns, sheets and procedure supplies, etc. Responsible for printing patient schedules for the day and arranging patient charts in the appropriate resident box when they arrive for appointment. Performs unassisted suture and staple removal. Performs unassisted dressing changes. Responsible for maintaining daily clinic activities of the Dermatology Clinic to include stocking necessary clinical supplies, filling liquid nitrogen tanks and containers and calling consults from the floor. Incumbent cross-trains to manage and deliver UVA/UVB therapy under physician supervision. Incumbent cross-trains to manage and deliver Excimer laser therapy under physician supervision. Incumbent cross-trains to manage and deliver Photodynamic therapy under physician supervision. Responsible for ordering dermatological surgical supplies, pharmacy supplies, instruments, and liquid Nitrogen. Leadership responsibilities: participation in staff meetings. Demonstrate effective communication both down to staff and up to leadership, to include heads up (for acute patient bad outcomes). Maintaining VA training requirements, Dermatology requirements, timely completion of documentation and upkeep of credentials required for privileging and re-privileging. Adheres to employee health requirements. Participate in Clinical Pertinence Reviews (routine medical record reviews). Time/Leave Management: Adherence to tour of Duties, timely requests for leave in VISTA and for clinic cancellations. Clinical Management including indirect patient care: open encounter & open consult management, CPRS documentation rules and requirements, adherence to clinic procedures for patient scheduling & access, ensuring staff productivity, oversight of relevant performance measures, and participation in the development of the new focus on the Medical Home and Patient Centric Care, Utilization, Quality, and Patient Safety oversight, process improvement (system redesign).

Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring walking, bending, sitting, standing and some stretching and reaching activities. Patients may need to be physically assisted to and from examining areas. Some carrying, pulling and pushing of moderately heavy objects (patient charts, carts, and instruments) will be required. Duties will require average dexterity and eyesight.

Qualifications
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
GS-7 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: assisting physicians with performing biopsies and excisions/Mohs, assists staff and resident physicians in performing dermatological duties such as shave, punch biopsies, and dressing changes/suture removals, prints patient schedules, maintaining daily clinic activities of the Dermatology Clinic, prepares and maintains exam/procedure rooms, provide indirect patient care such as open encounter and open consult management.
Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-07 level.
One (1) year of successfully completed graduate level education that is directly related to the work of the position to be filled (Health Technician-Dermatology). This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

Equivalent combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience to qualify at the GS-7 level. If you do not submit your transcript - education credit will not be awarded.
