This position is organizationally aligned under Facility Management Service (FMS), at the VA Illiana Health Care System VA Hospital (550), Danville, IL - a complexity level 3 VHA facility. The incumbent functions as an Electrician Leader within the Electric Shop, Operations and Maintenance, Facility Management Division.
Duties
Works as a working leader.
Passes on to other workers the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started, e.g., by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed by individual members of the group led.
Assist the supervisor in preparation of estimates and ordering of materials for constructions, maintenance, repair, or improvements to systems and structures through the Medical Center.
Seeing to it that needed plans, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
Obtaining needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work.
Maintaining a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives.
Incumbent will assume limited acting supervisory responsibilities during those periods when the supervisor of the team is not present for duty, i.e. on annual leave, sick leave, or training.
Utilizes Above PAR system to create, close and input hours for completed work orders.
Must obtain and maintain Level 1 Contracting Officer Representative (COR) Certification.
Installs, modifies, repairs, troubleshoots, loads, and tests new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls, and equipment such as secondary distribution lines and circuits; distribution panels; switchgear, power and control circuits; electrical warning/detection/fire alarm systems; high intensity lighting; etc.
Installs, tests, repairs, and maintains generators, transformers, connectors, regulators, switches, circuit breakers, recording instruments, control systems, etc. in powerhouses/substations and on underground/overhead high voltage, primary distribution systems.
Installs medium and low voltage electrical systems comprised of conduits, wire, cable and low voltage conductors, transformers, switchgear, motors, motor control centers, safety switches, motor starters, feeders, branch and control circuits, circuit breakers, fuses, relays, contactors, timers, photo-electric controls, push-buttons, pilot lights, switches, receptacles, plates, alarm systems (fire, med gas, exit, panic, and motion detection), cabling for phone, data and intercom systems, electric door carpets and controls, fans, water condensate pumps, vacuum pumps, water softeners, air compressors, and heating equipment.
Work Schedule: 7am-3:30pm / Monday - Friday / Overtime may be required to minimize impact to hospital operations.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed from ladders and in hard to reach places. The employee must work from standing, stooping, reaching, bending, kneeling and climbing positions, and frequently from tiring and uncomfortable positions using both hands simultaneously. It is occasionally necessary for employee to lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds and over.
Working Conditions: May be exposed to electrical shock or burns from electrically energized wires; cuts, and burns from handling wire, rope, and steel elevator cables; burns from steam-operated equipment; cuts and bruises from using the tools of the trade; and bodily injury from moving machinery. It is sometimes necessary that the employee work in cold and inclement conditions.
In this position, he/she is required to work in environments potentially containing dust, smoke, asbestos fibers, harmful vapors or other products that create a hazard to his/her health. It is mandatory that all approved protective equipment is worn as directed and all procedures that have been or will be adopted by the VA are followed to protect him/her from all known health hazards. As a condition to initial entrance on duty in this position, he/she must submit to and pass a physical examination, pulmonary function testing, and respirator certification by the personnel physician and be fitted to wear a respirator. His/her face must be clean-shaven in order to insure an approved respirator fit test.
