This position is located at the Illiana VA Health Care Center, Danville, IL. The work involves installing, modifying, testing, troubleshooting, and loading existing and new electrical systems and associated controls and equipment.
Duties
Installation work:
Installs medium and low voltage electrical systems comprised of conduits, wire, cable and low voltage conductors, transformers, switchgear, motors, motor control centers, safety switches, motor starters, feeders, branch and control circuits, circuit breakers, fuses, relays, contactors, timers, photo-electric controls, push-buttons, pilot lights, switches, receptacles, plates, alarm systems (fire, med gas, exit, panic, and motion detection), cabling for phone, data and intercom systems, electric door carpets and controls, fans, water condensate pumps, vacuum pumps, water softeners, air compressors, and heating equipment.
Troubleshooting, maintenance and repair:
Numerous battery-operated vehicles, floor scrubbers, tugs, and forklifts. Emergency lights, emergency exit lights, emergency generators, controls and automatic transfer switches. Maintenance shop equipment such as lathes, mills, saws, grinders, welders, planers, pipe threading machines, and electric hand-tools. Automated filing systems and various pieces of electric office equipment. The incumbent must also troubleshoot and repair steam and electric boiler controls. Clean, lubricate, adjust and repair automatic elevators, and dock levelers.
Inspection and documentation:
Must inspect and document tests each week on the emergency generators, circuit, and control equipment. Perform annual receptacle and/or non-clinical equipment electrical safety tests. Inspect emergency lights and emergency exit lights.

Physical Requirements: Work is performed from ladders and in hard to reach places. The employee must work from standing, stooping, reaching, bending, kneeling and climbing positions, and frequently from tiring and uncomfortable positions using both hands simultaneously. It is occasionally necessary for employee to lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds and over.
Working Conditions: The incumbent may be exposed to electrical shock or burns from electrically energized wires; cuts, and burns from handling wire, rope, and steel elevator cables; burns from steam-operated equipment; cuts and bruises from using the tools of the trade; and bodily injury from moving machinery. It is sometimes necessary that the employee work in cold and inclement conditions.
