This is a full-time position with the Counselor to the Chief Justice Office at the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, D.C. Duties

The Staff Assistant provides overall administrative assistance in the Office of the Counselor to the Chief Justice and performs a range of confidential activities in support of the day-to-day operation of the Office and Supreme Court Fellows Program. Responsibilities include general office support, Court guest and visiting dignitary assistance, meeting and event support, filling in for the Executive Assistant or other positions, as needed, and other duties as assigned. SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES: The Staff Assistant provides wide-ranging assistance throughout the day to the Counselor, the Staff Director, and the Special Assistant, including clerical, messengering, and records management duties. Duties include assisting with correspondence and inquiries, drafting responses, maintaining databases and assisting with various writing and office organization projects, including updates to the standard operating procedures manual for the office. The Staff Assistant assists the Counselor's Office guests and visiting dignitaries and leads building tours when a docent is unavailable. The Staff Assistant supports a variety of events coordinated by the Counselor's Office, including the scheduling and ordering of intern program lunches, legal exchanges, investitures, inaugural events, and memorials, among other special events. The Staff Assistant prepares name-tags and other printed materials, handles last minute changes on-site, and, when requested, assists with coordination with the Marshal's Office and other offices in setting up events. The Staff Assistant aids the Managing Director of the Fellows Program by facilitating tour requests from current Fellows, Program alumni, and Program agency leaders; compiling, organizing, and troubleshooting applications for both the Fellows Program and Supreme Court Intern Program; assisting with annual Fellows Program events and planning; and ensuring that Fellows Program information on the Supreme Court website is up-to-date. The Staff Assistant works closely and collaboratively with the Staff Director, Special Assistant, and Executive Assistant to ensure comprehensive coverage of all office needs, including filling in for the Executive Assistant or other positions, as needed.

Qualifications

The positon requires a highly motivated individual with strong organizational, drafting and research skills. Internet and basic software proficiencies including the Microsoft Office suite are required. Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with diverse audiences and perform under pressure, act on best judgment, and use discretion in handling sensitive information. Must be poised and confident in dealing with U.S. officials, foreign dignitaries, and other Court guests.

Education

A bachelor's degree required, and 1-2 years of experience in a busy office environment preferred.
