This position is located in the Location Support Staff of the Subtropical Horticulture Research Unit for the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) in Miami, FL.
In this position, you will perform the full range of tasks involved in the maintenance, repair and installation of the heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, plumbing, electrical, and irrigation systems.
Duties
Maintains all plumbing in and around the buildings and replaces pipes, fittings, valves, traps, rebuilds faucets, mixing valves, cleans traps and sewer lines, as necessary.
Serves as the on-site electrician in installing electrical services and running complete wiring systems or branch circuits, usually with a wiring system of 120/208/230/440 volt, single or three phase.
Services and maintains laboratory AC/heating systems and equipment, refrigeration condensing units, boilers,
compressors and all associated controls regulated by electrical, hydraulic or pneumatic systems.
Designs and oversees installation of irrigation systems.
Constructs experimental equipment using general lines of building materials following sketches, drawings, and
blueprints.
Operate maintenance shop equipment such as lathes, drill press, milling machine, electric and acetylene welding
equipment, autoclave equipment and grinders.
Troubleshoots and makes repairs within the facilities on laboratory equipment and appliances and installs and
repairs complex security devices.
Requirements

Qualifications

While a specific length of time and experience is not required for most Wage Grade positions, you must show through experience and training that you possess the best qualified level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of this position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily the length. Physical Effort:
Perform continual physical labor in lifting, carrying, and positioning heavy components. Works in bent or cramped positions and uses arms for long periods of time in using hand tools, shop tools, and equipment. Some high climbing is required in worth both inside and out-of-doors. Carries and sets up parts weighting up to 100 lbs.
Working Conditions:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Incumbent may be subjected to the danger of electrical shock, cuts, bruises, falls, exposure to dirt, temperature change, etc. Occasionally, work is performed in awkward, cramped positions. The outside work is sometimes performed under adverse weather conditions; and is subject to hazards from restricted pesticides. Safety equipment must be used when required.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
